I have been painting and drawing since I was a child and have a lifelong interest in all types of art. I was brought up in the countryside, spending many hours wandering through fields, watching the birds and animals around me. I have happy memories of drawing birds with my father and uncle from quite a young age. Now living by the sea in Kent, England, I can understand why Turner loved to paint the light on the Kentish coast in such an extraordinary manner. Over the latter part of my 'normal' working life (the day job), my attention has been drawn to figurative art, especially portraiture. Since my retirement I have thrown myself into being an Artist through the study of portraiture and figurative art.The figurative works I do tend to create a narrative in my mind and I try to transfer this to the canvas via drawing. Through quick sketching and digital photography I am able to capture an instant, an ideal, a snatched moment. I find that the method best suited for me is to carry out detailed drawings. Once I have the design fixed I can then move on to painting. Drawing allows me to sort out the proportion and the perspective. I can then add tone and tease out the form and check the design. After this I am able to transfer the image on to any surface that suits the piece by using the preparatory drawing. The use of a drawing helps, as it frees me from inhibitions and means that I can concentrate on the medium that I wish to use, hopefully improving the quality and vitality. The only real expense is time and that is not lost. Itís also valuable practice in the art of drawing which I feel is key to a successful result. I like this quote from Titian: 'It is not bright colours but good drawing that makes figures beautiful' My aim is to achieve what Pablo Picasso talks about: 'Drawing is a kind of hypnotism: one looks in such a way at the model, that he comes and takes a seat on the paper.' When I'm drawing I lose all sense of time and become immersed in capturing the essence of the subject. I was delighted to hear that my painting EL ROI had been highly commended in the Lancelot Andrewes Award. It had been chosen to be exhibited in Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge London England from 19th to 30th September 2011. This was the first notable recognition that my work has worth in the eyes of others.Copyright Declaration All images shown on this site are protected by International Copyright Law and by the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1988.
