Thanks to Denis Rule Photography for permission to use my profile photo.

I have been interested in photography since my high school days (in the chemical photography era) where I enjoyed standing under a safe-light in the school dark room watching the latent image slowly appear in the developer tray. I managed to acquire an enlarger and tied up the bathroom at home in an improvised dark room. I think fondly of those magical days while I am now sitting in my electronic darkroom trying to bring out the best in my images. Everything today is, of course, digital; but the basic skills and thrills of photography has not changed since my high school days.

In university, I specialized in science to the extent that I only ever took one arts course (Anthropology 200, as it turns out). I went to graduate school and ended up in a career as a research scientist, which meant that I spent most of my days navigating through a left-brained, rational world where the focus was on logical thinking, analysis, and accuracy. Now that I have largely retired from that world, I am seeking to develop the right side of my brain by more of a focus on aesthetics, feeling, and creativity. Of course, none of us is ever totally free of our earlier experiences, so I guess what I am doing is trying to combine my rational way of living with a more aware appreciation of the intangible world around us. I try to understand the world rationally while not missing the beauty and wonder of it all.

I photograph what interests me and that may vary from day to day, and month to month. The natural work of creatures and the environment is a very strong interest and I spend many hours of fondly observing the natural world around me, and by photography, I try to capture moments that depict the wonder of that world. I am a human, and photographing fellow humans and their activities is also a strong interest of mine.

Photography is one of the important ways I now try to understand the world and by which I hope to communicate that understanding to others. I hope that some of my images will touch you and perhaps raise in you the emotions and wonder that I felt when I made that image.

Robert is the sole owner of the Merivale Photographic Studio in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This studio, which is fully equipped with 'state-of-the art' equipment, is available to renters on an hourly fee basis.
