Roberta Smith invents jewel toned spaces where the real and the surreal meet in a compelling moment that pays homage to art history and contemplates the challenges of contemporary existence. Her luminous oil paintings chronicle metaphorical musings in which reality and invention are elegantly intermingled and the timely is juxtaposed with the timeless. The use of oil glazes, often applied over gold or silver leaf on canvas, creates shimmering surfaces that change with varying light.
'My working philosophy is expressed in these words by the poet Rumi, 'Let the beauty we love be what we do'. As my pieces become increasingly more intuitive and expressive I find that the more closely one reaches into the deeply personal the more one connects with the universal.'
After earning a BFA with honors at Pratt Institute in New York Roberta worked as a jewelry designer, graphic designer, children's book illustrator, muralist, and mixed media artist. Her collector's include The Children's Hospital Denver, Xcel Energy, Kaiser Permanente, Storage Tek, Delta Dental Plan, Invesco and the Fulbright Foundation.
