Once the northern part of the Dakota Territory, North Dakota is named for the indigenous Lakota and Dakota Sioux who once populated the territory and still remain a large and active community to this day. Other native tribes that inhabited the land include the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Ojibwa and Cree; as well as a number of Sioux groups, including the Assiniboin, Yankton, Wahpeton, and Teton.
