Just wondering if you are the only artist in your family or if there are others? Both my brother and my daughter are artist. I don't have an example of my brother's work but I do have one from my daughter. She is 16 years old.

Only me:
It's sad to say it but none of my five siblings or extended genetic family express themselves in any form which we might call art...

My mother was a fantastic portraitist. I wish I had an example to share. My great uncle was also painter.

I've got artist ahead of and following me.
My great grandfather on my fathers side was a wonderful fine artist oil painter, his daughter, my grandmother, painted professionally with oil and I think watercolor and she taught classes.
None of my 3 siblings paint or draw.
Both of my sons are artistic.
My eldest son can easily sketch out master pieces, he can draw free hand and do pointillism. He doesn't utilize this talent at the time and I wish I could use his skill while he isn't !
My younger son is artistic in the non traditional sense, creative computer stuff including creating music on computer.

Being the only one in Art, my family can be divided into 2 camps regarding my participation.
1. The "Whatever" side
and the
2. "Get a Real Job" crowd..(It's kinda late for this group, now.)

My aunt and uncle are quite the artists. I am sure many more would if they dared to try. I can see artistic tendencies in my kids, but neither seem to be into art. However, I often ask them for feedback and many times the advise it great.

My grandfather and one of his brothers were excellent artists as tailors. They drew their designs and made art well beyond their trade. His brothers had a few shops in London including I believe George's Square.
My grandfather's sister was a concert hall pianist in London and New York. That is the paternal side.
My maternal grandmother in her mid 90s took up painting, I was in my early 40s. Her work is wonderful. It has a certain surrealism as her sight was not so great. She has flowers dancing and hovering around a vase, that is commonly what she painted. I have one of her paintings.
Art skipped my parent's generation and most of my generation. But one of my sisters is running the largest writing school in the US. She founded the school in Boston.

My mom is an artist, watercolor and oils. She owned a gallery and taught art classes. She started losing her eye sight about 5 years ago and stopped painting, but she continued to teach up until last year. I have a niece who paints and teaches wine and paint parties in Reno. I have cousins who paint watercolors. My granddaughters are budding artists too.

I have a large extended family and there are a few of them that draw and paint. A few others play music. My oldest brother had artistic talent when he was young and my parents got a Jon Gnagy drawing kit for him. After he got tired of it, I took it over. Later he learned to play bass and worked his way from the East Coast to Las Vegas playing in bands. I also encouraged him to get into acting which he did and has been doing theater and film mostly locally in his area.
The most serious and professional artist however, is a first cousin who grew up in Chadds Ford PA with Jamie Wyeth (Son of Andrew Wyeth). They both became artists. My cousin's name is Bill Omwake but prefers EO.
Eo Omwake is an artist, film-maker, writer, and martial artist living and working in Pennsylvania. He has worked in many styles including abstraction and realism.
He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pa. in 1968 and later served as instructor of painting there.
His work has been exhibited internationally, including shows at the Whitney and Philadelphia Museums of Art.

My grandmother and brother were painters, and my dad and sister are too. My grandmother was also a concert pianist. My dad's paintings are hung all over my parents' house and their basement (unfinished) is lined with his paintings spread out along the floor, propped up on the walls. My dad raised us by doing commercial art.

My Mom painted watercolors, played clarinet and piano, was employed as a floral designer and in her later years, designed/sewed quilts. She taught me how to play piano, sew and draw/paint, prior to my attending school. My Dad did photography. His brother made paintings and sculpted.
My cousin Kim Basinger is an actress in Hollywood.
Both of my sons are quite good at drawing, but they didn't pursue it. They are both creative. My younger son loved doing pottery and is also good at designing/ building. He has the accurate color sense and is a perfectionist.
One of my granddaughters excels in photography and 2D art, interpretive dance and creating characters. She wrote and directed a 1.5 hour play when she was in elementary school. When she was in middle school, she wrote scripts for the youth at church, made the sets and directed. She is also a really good model for me, because she directs and emotes well.

As of right now I am the only one that does fine art. I have a very creative sister who is great at crocheting, sewing, and crafting. My mom is good at crocheting too. I do have a couple of creative aunts, but again it is mostly in crafting. My 13 year old nephew does show signs of being an artist though, he loves to draw and has always had a natural inclining for it.

Does Kim Basinger still act Linda? I haven't seen her for years, I used to really like her. Phoebe Cates too, I am sorry she quit the industry.
I don't know if I have any famous Finns on my father's side, but I am related to Buffalo Bill and John Connolly (of Easter Rising fame) on my mother's side. My great grandmother (Mary Connolly) was his sister or something, and my grandmother got sent to the US at the age of 13 by herself because it was not safe for her to stay in Ireland because she was so closely related to him. They actually executed him for the rebellion sitting down because he was wounded. Now they consider him a hero and sing songs about him, time changes everything I guess.
Finns are just boring.

Ha, Isabella F Abbie, they say we look a like. :-) Joking.
Yes, I heard it many years ago, but only recently was able to verify how on ancestry. There were 3 Basinger brothers that came to the USA in 1770, on the ship Minerva. They settled around PA, KY and Virginia. There was a split in the family before the Civil War, when Philip Jacob's (middle brother) son Peter had an argument and left. He went down to Savannah, Georgia. In my line, Casper, changed the spelling, adding the Y. The other side didn't, but there were other spellings/misspellings. Kim (Kimila Ann) is descended from William Starr Basinger and she is from the line in GA. William Starr was a descendant of Philip Jacob, one of the 3 Basinger brothers. I am descended from Johann Peter, the eldest of the 3 brothers. My side went West, to Illinois, Iowa, then up to MN. They kept moving, to SD, then WY. My great aunt was a pioneer in Jackson Hole, WY, living in a log cabin all of her life. My Dad's side moved far and wide. My Mom's side came to MN and stayed there.
Susan, I don't know.

Linda,
Wonderful story of Americana
I would be more interested. though, if you are related to the great muralist and fellow FAA member, CHARLES PECK
And by the way, the late Patrick Swayze is a distant cousin,...Both our ancestries can be directly traced to a John Swasey. who arrived to this half of the globe in 1629

My son, Tim, is an exceptional artist with degrees in Fine Art and Film.
My mother painted portraits of her children in 1961 - I still have mine. She was very good but never did a lot with it.
My wife is talented with clay, sewing, quilting, macramé, knitting, applique, and she had written 2 books.
Then there are the cousins through genealogy: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Norman Rockwell.

My grandfather was a cartoonist. Grandmother was a concert pianist. My parents met in art school. My father became a commercial artist and painted on the side. My mother painted in oil, pastel, watercolor. She did portrait commissions, landscapes, still life, etc. My brother paints and worked in commercial art. My aunt did fashion illustration. One Uncle worked as an illustrator for Bell Labs.
I was totally surrounded by art and artists growing up. Having the latest nude propped up on the mantle was normal except when I brought my friends into the house. Childhood playmates were often surprised or shocked so I understood early on my upbringing was different than theirs.

My mom was an artist but hasn't painted in years. When I was growing up she used to paint in oils, mostly still life and landscapes. She sold some of her paintings, gave some away. She also taught a summer art class for several years for the neighborhood kids.
She tried to give me advice when I took an interest in painting but I was too detail oriented and never quite got the hang of it, so I stuck to my drawing. She had "loose" strokes similar to Van Gogh, I believe. She also had a great eye for color combinations.
There were a few abstract works she created that have been my favorites to this day. She incorporated huge pieces of driftwood, then mixed sand, eggs (maybe just the shells) paint, and gravel to create a wonderful textured work of art.
