Spinning Wheels

I have mentioned this in other threads but was hoping to get more specific help, I have a mac It is a basic one with limited memory and processing capabilities, I had bought Topaz Impression and was using it as a standalone, I quit using Impression because it was so slow, Topaz created Topaz Studio which I like very much and inside Studio I am now able to use Impression along with other Topaz plugins with no problem,,,Often I will go to close Studio and will be prompted to do updates, I always do the updates but have a feeling that the additional updates will eventually cause my Mac to freeze up, I noticed yesterday for example, when I would process my photos the little Apple wheel would spin as though it was having problems processing, I hate to miss out on the updates because they have been very beneficial , but don't want to miss out completely by allowing it to overpower my Macs capability, I would appreciate any guidance, I guess I need to know just how far I can go or if there is something more I can do,

Hi Judy - I am finding that Impression is indeed faster with the new Topaz Studio, and I would recommend installing the updates, because they are probably tweaking it as they get feedback from users. I think it’s a real RAM hog… if you only have a minimum amount of RAM, you’ll likely have issues. I have 24GB. The RAM is very easy to install… do you have an iMac?

I'm glad you posted this. I recently got Topaz and yesterday I tried to "pick your favorite image" in a group and ended up with several of the same because when I posted no picture showed up so I kept reposting. After I read your post I realized it was taking a very long time for the picture to show so Topaz has slowed my computer down considerably.

Hi Becky yes a imac! Bought in 2014 it has 8 GB ram not expandable Intel 5000 graphic card. ( I think) right now I'm on my tablet. I do know that topaz moderators had told me my configuration is limited in what it can handle and not expandable! I can live with it as it is now as long as it doesn't get much worse! I have been so happy with how it has been performing! Yesterday I really put it through the test! Adding effects and layering. Images. i may start exporting the image to desktop and bring it back in to add additional efffcts. Trying to do too much within the host studio program may be too taxing

I think they are mistaken about that “not expandable” part, at least where RAM is concerned. I had a pre-2015 iMac that I added more RAM to. Here is a link that might be useful…

Betsy, that sounds more like a browser issue. Also, Topaz Studio can't slow your computer down if it's not running. Just quit the program when you're not using it :-)

Becky thanks for the link, My mac is 21,5 Mid 2014 ,,,link indicates following *Memory isn't removable by users on iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2014), iMac (21.5-inch, 2017), and iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017). If the memory in one of these computers needs to be replaced, contact an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. If you’d like to upgrade the memory in one of these models, an Apple Authorized Service Provider can help.

I have spoken to countless reps at apple including the genius store and they insist it cannot be upgraded, I will check further now that I have this link, Thanks again!

Well, that’s a total bummer. Mine was a 27”… guess I was assuming the RAM could be upgraded in any iMac. Very un-Apple-like of them :-(

I did find this…

“Sadly, for the 21.5-Inch "Mid-2014" iMac -- the iMac "Core i5" 1.4 21.5-Inch (Mid-2014) -- Apple notes that it has "8 GB of 1600 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory." OWC disassembled one and confirmed that the RAM is indeed soldered onboard and cannot be upgraded at all. This low-end model could not even be configured with more RAM at the time of initial purchase.”

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/imac-aluminum-tapered-edge-faq/how-to-upgrade-imac-ram-aluminum-2012.html

I guess the only other thing you might do is have lots of disk space available for virtual memory. You can accomplish that with an external drive if your iMac is close to full.

I use topaz products on a MAC. late 2013 with 16GB and the new topaz studio, including impressions runs noticeably faster I have their whole suite, so when Studio came out, the plugins are filling in on Studio.
Have you upgraded to High Sierra? not sure if it will help.

Becky Titus

Betsy, that is a very small amount of RAM for programs like Photoshop & the Topaz Studio Suite. It will definitely help if you only run one program at a time.

You can see how much RAM you’re currently using via the Activity Monitor, which might be in your Dock. If it’s not there, go to Applications/Utilities. In the Activity Monitor, click on the Memory tab at the top and you’ll see how your RAM is currently being used, and whether you’re currently using all of it + some disk space.

Sounds like it's time to upgrade, I know that's not what you want to hear but it happens to all of us eventually. That being said, Apple does have a resale section where they sell refurbished stuff with a guarantee at very good prices. You might wanna keep your eye on that.

Bill I have not upgraded to High Sierra, For the first time I have failed to update to the latest OS, For the first time in such a long time I am finally able to work fairly effortlessly; except for that spinning wheel that started yesterday, I have been reading that many people have been having issues with compatibility with their apps after upgrading to High Sierra,Another thing, I usually get prompts from Apple when the OS becomes available for download , Since they didn't send it it made me think that maybe my mac is not a good candidate?! I plan to bite the bullet and try it next week anyway,, I hear you Susan, its just that a mac with the specs I want and need will be very expensive,,,,I cannot bring myself to going back to Microsoft; i loved the xp os but got so tired of the endless updates and trying to keep pace with all of the Virus software issues,

Hi again! I just downloaded a memory cleaner from the apple store, It had a high rating, supposedly it is supposed to free up memory but when I am working in Studio it keeps giving me a prompt that my systems memory level has reached a high level. I just closed studio and now it says it has returned to normal, I thought this app was supposed to resolve some of the memory problems,,, anyway I guess Im back to needing a new Mac,,,Maybe xmas, I have another question,,, When I save a file in Topaz Studio and go to export the item it asks me if I want to save it in SRGB or to the default which is ProPhoto, When I click on my images and Command I it shows that my photos are RGB so I have assumed that I should save in SRGB. There is no option within Studio to have that be my default option and the spinning wheel takes a while to change from their ProPHoto default, Should I save in SRGB or ProPhoto?

I just purchase Apple iMac 21.5" 8GB, 1TB holds millions of photo. I read something about a cloud feature that you can store your images. I was told to get a External Hard Drive to store what you have. I may wrong as I am a newbie with Apple. I don't know if this is related to what you were discussing.

Hi Judy! Are you working with Studio/Impression as a Photoshop or Lightroom plugin, or are you using it as a standalone? I use it as a Photoshop plugin, but if I open an image in the standalone version, apply some filters, then Save As, I don’t get a prompt for a color space, so I’m perplexed about where you’re seeing that.

ProPhoto is a very wide gamut color space that is generally used with 16 bit images that you would print yourself on a high end wide gamut printer. I use Adobe RGB because I get the most accurate prints vs what I see on my monitor; others here use sRGB, but that has a smaller gamut (the range of colors it encompasses), and is more appropriate for on-screen viewing, not for printing.

Here is some info… there’s lots more out there - try googling color management Photoshop…

Randy, thanks but storage is not my issue,,I have a external drive for that, The problem I am having is with processing,,,the ram and graphic card, After I sent this message I went to the apple store to explore some of my options, He said I could take my mac in and get additional upgrades with ram through some 3rd party company here in Miami, but could not guarantee that my components would be compatible, Randy, if you plan on doing a lot of photo processing, manipulation and using LR and or PS, I would look into upgrading your ram and your graphic card if it is not too late,

If I stay with APPLE I will need to get yet another mac and purchase higher ram and a better ddr4 graphic card, I also went to the microsoft store,Of course they advised me to stay away from apple because they are downgrading their pro photo and art processing and putting emphasis on the iPhone, It does seem that way unless you go with their new system which is coming out for 5,000, Everything now is being geared to the Pro and wealthy, From cameras to pc etc, They were trying to sell me on the surface pro 2,,,for me I would compare it to the following,,,,would I want to watch tv on a 14 in screen after seeing it on a 60 inch screen,,,No thanks!
Becky I do not have LR or PS,I use it standalone, I was told that those programs are too powerful for my mac so I never bothered, I use apple photos for very basic editing,,,and now import the photo into Studio to boost my photo editing capabilities,,Becky it is all so confusing, Thanks for the link, I hope it will help clear up matters, It just seems that changing the photo format from SRGB to ProPhoto could cause some issue compatibility with FAA etc, I don't print out my own photos,

Yes, color management can be confusing as all get out. It took me ages before I got a semi-grip on it.

I’m still unclear on where you’re getting prompted to choose between sRGB and ProPhoto… in Studio, are you opening JPG images that you made some basic adjustments to in Apple Photo, then adding Impression effects, then choosing Save As from the File menu?

By the way, when you’re working with a particular image, is that image file on your iMac, or only on your external drive? If it’s on the external drive, you might find it speeds things up a tiny bit to move it to your iMac while you’re working on it.

Just got home! Becky my flow is that I shoot in raw ,then upload the photos into my Mac into the photos application .. I do minor edits there. Then I export the photo as a tiff to desktop then drag it into studio. I fine tune the edits as needed and add effects . Then I export it again from studio (save as)as a tiff SRGB and then drag it back into photos .. now you know why I don’t find time to do much in the way of marketing Ha! It’s probably a redicuous flow but one I understand, or so I think! All of my images are stored within the external drive ! Since I do the edits within the Mac photos app I they are being processed in the Mac

Thanks Judy, but I already spend enough money on the iMac.I don't know how they can add more RAM since Apple is sealed. My is 2017- Mac OS Sierra, 8GB / 1 TB, 2.3 GHz. Graphics 640 1536 MB.

Randy some of the models can be upgraded,,,,,Not sure if yours would quality you can check . It would need to be through a 3rd party retailer,,Here is the link, https://locate.apple.com If you don't do it now if it qualifies it may not be an option later ,,,If you just recently bought it apple may let you return it for a upgraded version, If you just shoot straight photography and don't plan on using PS or LR type programs then it shouldn't be a problem If you do,,,then I would definitely do something now, IF anything call a 3rd party and give them your specs,,,maybe your model is better equipped than my 2014 version, Your graphic card is different,,maybe that will make a difference,

Randy Pollard

Hi Judy, Yes this is something I could check into. Now, PS are you referring to Photoshop? What I have now is Pixelmator and I need to get Photomatix for doing HDR. Since I lost my software when they transfer everything from my old computer. I'll check into this 3rd party retailer.

Judy… Aha! It’s the TIFF format that’s causing Studio to ask what color profile you want. Are you choosing 8 bit or 16 bit? 16 bit will create a substantially larger file, and thus is more likely to cause Studio to doze off during the export.

You can avoid that dialog box by choosing to export as JPG max quality. I don’t think that will degrade the image quality, so long as you don’t subsequently resize the JPEG from any application. If you want to keep a TIFF version (good idea) of the modified image, you can do that from Photos.

Note that when you export as TIFF from Photos, you can choose AdobeRGB as the color profile if you like., but I noticed that Studio does not include AdobeRGB as one of the profiles available when you re-export as TIFF… strange.

I wouldn’t even begin to try to explain some of my convoluted workflows :-)

Judy Kay

Becky, thats another matter too, When I export the Tiff from photos to desktop for importation into Studio, i do not check the 16 bit option as I feared it would make my processing even more challenging in Studio, After i finish editing that import in Studio, I then export it as tiff as I felt it would incorporate less compression, As you mentioned not exporting it from photos 16 bit already is reducing the image size so I felt due to that aspect exporting it from studio as jpeg would reduce size even more, I will experiment and export from photos 16 bit and then export after editing in Studio as jpeg,

Becky Titus

If you don’t normally work in 16 bit, I wouldn’t recommend it, as it will slow things down considerably, though it can make a significant difference in image quality. I don’t use it… too slow & gobbles up disk space. Here is a description of 8 bit vs 16 bit…

https://www.diyphotography.net/8-bit-vs-16-bit-color-depth-use-matters/

If you start with an 8 bit image, then you add some effects to it, then you export it as 16 bit, you won’t be gaining anything, as the effects were applied to the 8 bit image, and can’t be interpolated to 16 bit. You would have start with a 16 bit image.

Keep in mind that inevitably, the image will be a JPG, since that’s what we upload. The trick is to maintain the image quality in the JPG, and you should be able to do that by always saving at max JPG quality (except when that creates a file too large to upload) and by always using a non-lossy format (like TIFF) when you need to resize an image. Nonetheless, if it was me, I’d probably stick with exporting from Studio as TIFF 8 bit sRGB (since there’s no Adobe RGB), and just go get a glass of water while it processes.

You still might want to consider temporarily moving the image to your computer for processing. The computer’s access to the file, for processing and saving, is faster via the hard drive than it is via the USB connection.

just an update I have two open support issues with Topaz Studio. However none with performance. I'm not sure what you also have on your machine.
I keep all my data, including pics and videos on an external 5tb drive, and there is no noticeable performance issues

I would suggest running disk utility on your disk Top menu, GO> UTILITIES > DISK UTILITY > Select the drive then on the top menu of that window, select "FIRST AID" > RUN
I will tell you it will lock the applications, but that ok, it will only take a few minutes to run. Is should give you a PASS

Also go to your utility monitor this will be in the same window as Disk Utility. Once Utility Monitor is open select CPU on the top menu, then %CPU click on the %CPU title of the column to for by highest use, then see if there is anything over 4.0 or so See what is using up the CPU and maybe shut it down.

Knock on wood. I really enjoy working within studio!
PS Bill I keep a utility monitor open that keeps me informed about usage. I always close all applications when I am working in Studio .

If you do a lot of heavy editing, 16 bit is a non-negotiable necessity in my experience. But, yep, definitely makes things more unwieldy. Worth it for the possibilities, though (especially if you have the processing power).

I have never ticked the 16 bit option when I export the photos but I am going to experiment and see what happens! If the wheel spins at 8 I can only imagine 16 though

EDIT I just exported an image as 16 bit from photos,,,and I realize now that studio is saving by default the image as 16 bit, What does it mean if I export as 8 bit and it saves as 16 bit,,, ?? I did an image layer with this 16 bit export and everything was going ok, I used the Color Theme slider to change the color of the bird,,,It looked good I saved it and exported as Srgb ,,,the colors were totally different than it appeared when I saved it so I had to delete it, Also, the program was slower than usual, I guess I will continue to export as 8 bit (I suppose that is what Photos exports it as)

I have another question about editing when working within Topaz Studio, When editing photos in this program I notice that when you view your photo at 100% magnification in Studio the histogram changes significantly,,,So the question is should all edits within Studio be done at 100 % magnification? ...Or should you do normal edits at regular magnification and adjust the opacity till the histogram is ok at 100%. ,,,or does it matter at all?!

Bill Posner

The histogram changes because the area of the screen it's reading changes.
I start in the "fit to screen" mode then as I work I'll zoom in if I need to check something.

I've round and round with Topaz support the last 5 updates, which came pretty quick and there were all sorts of issues (on Mac) I think now they are settled.

Judy, notihng about Topaz. My question is I have a 2017 iMac, there is a slot on the back of the iMac for the SD card. When I open from the SD card, it's telling me there is "no name". I want to put in the "photo" library so I can work on these in PS and I don't know how to do this. Any ideas?

Judy Kay

Randy, I am not sure . When I transfer images from my Sony via usb to Mac they automatically go into the photos library, It could have to do with your photo settings? Not even sure if this link will help but here is one https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=how+to+transfer+images+from+sd+slot+on+mac&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Randy, is the title of the card on your desktop "No Name"? Are their images you can see on the card? Sounds like the card is recognized but has not been given an identifier during a format.

Becky Titus

Hi Randy -

Open the folder called NO NAME by double-clicking on in. Inside that folder, you might find another folder called DCIM. Open that folder also… inside it you will likely find your pictures. Then open another window on the desktop and navigate to wherever you store your images. You might want to make another folder inside your main photos folder, maybe named with a date or description of location for these pictures. Go back to the NO NAME / DCIM window and select all (Command A). Drag this selection to the window you have open for the images folder… the images will be copied to the hard drive.

To eject the SD card from the computer, select its icon on the desktop and type Command E, or choose Eject from the File menu. It’s best to eject it before you pull it out of the card slot.

Hope this helps!

P.S. I would LOVE to see Topaz Studio add a paint program within the studio, That way you can touch up with that little eyedropper that matches the paint color, Would that ever be fantastic?
