Winter Is So Much Fun

I mean, come on... aren't you people in FL just a little jealous you don't get to have this much fun?

AZ checking in here....THAT is exactly why I left Michigan.
Do I miss it?
Not.
One.
Bit.

Val Arie

Dan you forgot the word NOT in the OP.

I try to convince myself that I would miss the seasons in the north east. But the reality of the seasons is usually nothing I would miss. Cold wet spring, hot and humid summers, fall is the best, sometimes, and then this! Winter!

In my mind I love the snow, so beautiful to watch while it comes down, sitting by the fire with a hot drink. It is just so magical, but then you have to go out into it and move it about....the magic vanishes real quick!

Today I had to take the car for repair. Just to exit the house 40 pounds of clothes, hat, scarf, gloves, boots. Pry the door open because I forgot to move the stuff. Then the snow that I thought would have melted off the car did not...it had turned into a solid frozen mass that had to be hacked off, doors had to be pried open. Then the window got stuck (frozen) open. Car said it was twenty degrees but the wind blowing in felt about 2.

Marlene AZ sounds better and better!

Actually, I love the snow but hate the cold.

We couldn't get enough winter in NH so the wife and I just traveled up to Quebec City for a few days skiing with a group - whole bus load of winter fun loving people. Beautiful walking around the city this afternoon, a bit slushy and brisk but rather cool looking at the white roof tops and the ice flowing down the river.

i used to do that in those auto smash up games, probably the best part of the game. people diving out of the way, lights and poles flying.

around here i think we had our 16th water main break in the last 2 weeks. the snow we just had wasn't much of anything, and its supposed to warm up from this point on. which probably means we will have a big blizzard and a cold spell. typically around here winter starts mid jan. but it started a month earlier.

if i lived in a prettier area, a small town, something with covered bridges and amish with their horses. or a farm land, i would like snow more. but around here it only means something you have to shovel or get fined. moving your car off the road or get fined. or slip on the ice and break something familiar. its times like this i'm glad i work at home. i would have run out of days by now.

Did you see the following video? Storm Chasers . com??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i59v0p-gAtk

While my son was in college he drove a tow truck. Oh the stories. That's actually why I color my hair. (Has nothing to do with age.)

Val Arie - you are right - it was meant sarcastically, so "NOT"

JC - sorry, they come together

Edward - I hear ya'; but you got to admit - trudging around and having fun is much better than the torturous snow tasks at home.

Lois, didn't look at the video but will

Actually, I'm torn. Born and raised in SoCal, I spent my first 30+ years there. Although I lived in places with much more severe snows and am experienced with it (Big Bear Lake), SoCal has no seasons. When I moved to NC I discovered weather changes. Shazaam! I kinda enjoy the seasons... except this morning. Like Val Arie, the car door was glued shut, it was 9 degrees, and it really wasn't much fun. Having fun like edward is a whole lot different than the home grind.

And like Mike, I've given up on trusting the clueless weather yahoos. They forecast 1-3", I measured 11" I would call that a "miss".

Temps have have been lost to zero and kids still out of school. Suppose to go in 50's and 60's Sat. Sure! Roads cleared enough for me to go swimming today FINALLY!

New Englander here. I Love it! Love it! Love it! I've taken some wonderful photographs this year during that long freeze.

Given a choice of bugs vs. snow - Snow wins hands down!!!

Winter is my second favorite season after Autumn.

Where's your sense of adventure? Get outdoors and enjoy winter's beauty.

I'm "happy as a clam".

Wow, at least he tried to avoid running over the little car!

Meanwhile, I am just glad we haven't had any ice here in Oklahoma this year (knock wood). We had two ice storms last winter and I was hoping one of them just got the wrong year. It's been cold but not too bad so far. Right after winter we roll right on into tornado season though, so get the cameras ready!

I hate the cold winter wind but prefer winter over sweating in the hot humid summer!
Winter can be beautiful if you look for it.

Janice, I'm with you! I'll take winter over summer any day!

"Winter can be beautiful if you look for it."

It can be but it's usually not, even when it is the day is too short to enjoy it. I'll take a bad summer day over a "good" winter day anytime.

The worst of it is over. Now we sit it out till it exhausts us, then the snow melts and the flowers pierce the ground.

I live in Mike's version of wonderland now, but I loved winter and snow when I lived on Long Island, South Jersey and DelaWHERE? too. I equally despise summer in all the places, everywhere.

The one downfall to this rural wonderland Mike missed tho, is that sometimes we are The Land Snow Plows Forgot, which I'm sure the Amish don't appreciate either though they'd never admit it. And we have a long steep driveway too, which my husband absolutely hates to snow blow. But Mike is right, once you can get around without fear of dying, it sure is purty!

1-3" is 13" if you take that pesky line out. sometimes you get the wobble and its so much more.

what do i like about the winter?

no bugs
not much sound, even birds are too cold to tweet
no leaf blowers, unless its a snow blower
i get to wear my pretty winter fashions... which resembles a confused and lost eskimo. i have air force mittens, that look a lot like pot holder mittens. a down coat. a new merino wool scarfy thing for my neck (goes over the head). a new pull over hat with a brim that keeps my face warm in a material i'm not actually allergic too. and on top of all of that, my rabbit fur ushanka. only my nose gets cold, if that's covered up my glasses fog over. and then i'm blind.

i thought about getting goggles, but the ones i looked at - made me look like a lost fighter pilot and it was overkill for a walk. as it is dogs growl at me because with that big black fuzzy hat, and the black coat, i look like a big dog. only one dog knows who i am.

basically i hate each season. they have their highlights, but there is a reason to hate them all.

winter is too cold and blinding and shovely.
spring has too much pollen and i can't see or breath
fall, if it doesn't have hurricanes, i don't have too much trouble with.
summer is too hot and buggy. if it wasn't so humid its really not bad.

It is stinking hot here in Oz. Middle of summer. Forty degrees centigrade and I'm looking forward to winter.

This is NOT the best time to ask me this question. It's too blasted cold - already at the freezing point here in Florida. But one of the other places I'd like to live was at 27°F already today as well. And it's not humid cold - it's dry here and has been for a couple of days now - which is why it's so cold. I've no interest in ice, sleet or snow - well snow in the landscape - but I don't want to get even a little chilled to take them.

But otherwise - in a mild winter - it beats the heat of summer and humidity of a summer in Florida. And very truthfully - the bugs are as bad anywhere else in the summer as here - perhaps not out in the southwest desert - IF you are in the desert. Mostly I could do without the gnats or mosquitoes - but it seems everyone has mosquitoes - except the desert. Hmmmm - that's leading somewhere.

It’s nice seeing others enjoying winter. Usually I’m the odd one out.

With that said though, it isn’t joyful if one has to be out on slick roads. It isn’t pleasant to lose power without backup heat during winter months.

Other than those two points, it beats the heat of summer. Snow and ice pretty the landscape.

BTW - Justin Trudeau is staying in my hotel. One of the group members snapped a shot of him earlier. Secret Service was holding an elevator for him when we got back from dinner.

....

Everything is quieter and more peaceful under a blanket of snow. I perfer to use a shovel if the snow isn't too heavy or deep, just so that I don't disturb that great peaceful quiet.

Kind of warm here in Quebec City, 28 degrees or so. Snow was falling gently all day but it got kind of slushy. Not much in the way of snow removal in the old historic area. I guess no place to put it. Interesting watching the ferries make their way across the river chock full of ice chunks.

I hate winter except as a motif. And I hope to move to Florida soon.

Or maybe New California...

LOL JL! The problem is New California will have just as many earthquakes as it did when it was part of Old California. Too bad they can't pick it up and move it when they secede.

Love Winter here on the Oregon Coast. Yesterday we had lightning, hail and 35+ waves on shore.. spectacular day!

We had a lovely winter's day up in the Poconos here. The sun was shining , with no wind - it was 31 degrees and quite lovely.

Went up to 42 degrees in town , coats open & it felt like spring.

I coud do that, if that was winter, but nothing under 30 degrees please - & under 20 should be outlawed.

That was really nice what you said Edward about not wanting to disturb the quiet.

This morning we had the threat of rain but it held off. Had a great ski 10k along a river, passing polite and happy Canadians who smiled and said "Bonjour" as they skated past like Olympians, with nothing on but thin skin of racing wear.

Skied from the Xcountry area to the Alpine area at St. Anne's where we could get a beer or two. Back at the hotel everyone was preparing for the upcoming Winter Carnival with the happy smiling snowman mascot Bonhomme, the King of the Quebec Winter Carnival, with his signature red cap and rainbow sash.

Walking by the 1800s toboggan run we were asked to take a photo of a couple. The first shot was as standard photo, the second one had the guy on one knee proposing to his girlfriend with the Fairmont Le Chateu Frontenac in the background.

Winter - you have to know to handle it.

We had our first real snow storm today, we got about 6" or so in my area, I think that's more than the total of all the snow we've received for the rest of the season. Looking at the forecast I don't think this snow will be sticking around long, except in the shadows.

Edward Fielding

Good base the other day even with the rain. Now we are getting a nice thick blanket on top of it.
