Malewarebites - Trouble

Earlier this afternoon, My wife's desktop PC was acting up, it would start and then stall - and stop, she couldn't X out of whatever she was doing/watching and the computer wouldn't even shut down - I finally had to unplug it - which shouldn't ever happen - and plug it back in. For about 15 minutes it seemed to work fine - then it started acting up again. I don't know how I determined what the problem was - but when I un-installed Malewarebites - she's had no more problems with it.

Act two - about an hour ago, my computer began behaving the same way. stalling out and unable to get out of FB or FAA and couldn't shut the computer down. So I went to the control panel and un-installed Maleware bites. My computer seems to be running faster and I'm not having any of the problems it was having.

Don't know what the real problem was - but getting rid of Malwarebites seemed to have solved it.

Do you have Windows 10? I've read about issues with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes..

I use bit defender for my realtime av and have the free version of mwb just for scanning and clean ups if needed, which means if I think I have been compromised I manually run a scan which finds and quarantines any nasties. But bit defender is pretty good and low impact on your resources. I am also on a Win 10 pc

I just came here to post about this. Apparently there is already a fix, here's what Betanews has to say:

https://betanews.com/2018/01/27/malwarebytes-slow/

Hopefully they didn't rush it.

Roy, I had the same problem when I turned on the PC today. I think McAfee AntiVirus Plus or MalwareBytes have must have recently updated, and something changed the compatibility between programs. It was working fine until I turned off the PC last night. I had a similar problem about a month ago when MalwareBytes and another anti-virus program conflicted. I'm paying for MalwareBytes now so I didn't want to remove it but I quit out of it today to have my PC run adequately. I'm paying for McAfee also but until today, they ran together without problems. At least I know now that I'm not alone.

Of course the softwares always tell you not to run more than one at the same time, but I figured if there's no problem, I'll let them continue. For now at least, it looks like an incompatibility of some sort.

If anyone finds out additional information pleas update the thread.
Thanks!

UPDATE...
I just checked the Malwarebytes support page https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-2342 and saw this...

Earlier this morning, January 27th, 2018, we published a protection update that caused connection issues for many of our customers. As a side effect of the web protection blocks, the product also spiked memory usage and possibly caused a crash. We have triaged this issue and pushed a protection update that resolves it. Please follow the steps below on how to update to the latest database.

If you are having this issue while running our Malwarebytes for home product, please follow these steps:

Open Malwarebytes for home product.
Turn OFF web protection by Clicking on Settings, click to turn web protection OFF.
Under Scan Status (right side), click next to Updates to have Malwarebytes download the latest database
Restart your computer.

Note: It may take up to 2 restarts after the update to stabilize the system.

To confirm that you are on the latest database please follow the steps below:

Open Malwarebytes for home product.
Click on Settings.
Click on the About tab.
Next to Update package version, if you see version 1.0.3803 or higher, you are on the latest database which addresses this issue.

Apparently only the paid update is affected, the freebie isn't.

Had a similar problem earlier today. i thought I solved mine by turning off avast, as suggested in a forum, but I bet it was malwarebytes correcting itself......all is well now.
My pc was running in red at 97% and I couldn't click on anything.

Probably Susan... Malwarebytes support is referring to the version as "Malwarebytes for home product".

In any case I just completed the instructions and all is well again.

Next to Update package version, I now show version 1.0.3805

Note: As the instructions indicated might happen, when it was time to "restart", the restart it began but was slow and basically stopped. I let it continue for a while slowly but eventually I just powered it down and restarted (hard start) again which is basically the 2nd restart to get it going.

Most probably know this already but to power the PC down when it's stuck like that, you hold the power button down until the machine turns off. (No need to actually pull the plug itself). Holding the power switch down until it starts to power down takes approx. 3 to 6 seconds.

Wow. This is surprising to me. I've got AVG and Malewarebytes on my machine and both are running fine, no conflicts and my machine doesn't have any issues. I did turn off Windows Defender (Win 10) because of known issues with Defender and other apps.

Roy - are you certain the desktop is not infected with anything?

Whenever I've had issues shutting down browser windows, I've found it's typically due to hitting a site that has some sort of maleware as window after window will keep opening. I usually open task manager and close all the windows down by ending task on browser windows. Then I scan for any infections.

No, no Windows 10. I have 7 pro as does my wife. (except on her laptop which was one of those caught when they just moved you to windows 10 without asking - she hates it). And I only had the free version of Malwarebites. I will never understand this constant fiddling with what ain't broke.

I was also fine with 7. I've adjusted to 10 and there are some benefits, but there are things about it I don't like. But that's just me.

I would open task manager, check what's loading at start up and see if you recognize everything there.

This thread is sexist. I am certain there are an equal amount of femalewarebites to be concerned about as well. #notallmalewarebites

yeah i was called over to my fathers office and the machines went bonko bananas. and it ran out of memory. never saw the machine ever do that. when i tried loading up the program that's when it all froze. so i figured it was that. i disabled it and replace it with IObit, a nagware sort of checker and it works. it doesn't kill the machine like malware bytes did.

it just suddenly started. one machine didn't have the program update itself and another did with the same results. so i can only assume it was a windows update.

i do know the program checks home a little too often. i don't really miss it now that its off.

i couldn't take a chance to leave it, it controlled the business computer and back up.
