Nothing but good experiences, in the US and several other countries - Canada, and Central Europe.
I do make sure to only book places that have lots of reviews, so I'm not the guinea pig.

When I used them about 3 years ago we had a great experience.

Thank you Joshua and Heather. I found several this morning that were brand new, just renovated old victorian homes but they were on the market for the first time and I wanted those reviews!!

I've never used Airbnb, but have used VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) many times. From what I understand, they are very similar, but VRBO has been around longer (recently purchased by Homeaway). With my family of 4, getting 2 hotel rooms in a nice location can be very pricey, but with VRBO we get a 2 bedroom house or condo for a much better rate. Of course, you also have more room to spread out, or be together, a kitchen, and often a pool or other amenities. Definitely a great way to go!

I've used VRBO for vacation on Prince Edward Island for cabins. My brother rents his place on Cape Cod via Airbnb.

We've also used VRBO several summers ago for a place in RI. We were not happy with that particular property owner. We were at the end of the summer, she kept the deposit wrongfully to pay for her yearly clean up. The place sucked and was moldy. Dirty really, but it was the end of the season by the shore. Little Compton, the beach was terrific.

My sister left off a bad review. The woman was acting baffled and insulted as to why. She ripped us off.

I know someone who uses them several times a year in the San Francisco vicinity. I would somehow check how thorough a cleaning they do between visitors. And if it's important to you whether they have WiFi, parking, coded keys, etc. And, of course, crime in the neighborhood, regardless of the building's charm.

I used Airbnb several times (as guest) with very good results.

I've used airbnb in a couple cities in France and also in Thailand. Overall very good experiences. Read the reviews because they were pretty accurate. I would use airbnb again. After booking a place in Paris we decided to change to a different location and we had no problems switching. Communication with the owners was very good before arrival. We've noticed that in general airbnb is cheaper than staying at a hotel and you also get to live with the locals which is a great cultural experience.

Very good experiences with airbnb in the adirondacks, boulder, San Francisco and Sebastopol.

Nothing but positive experiences as a guest. I even did a four month long stay through AirBnB which was quite a bit easier than finding a short-term lease on an apartment.

Rented a few houses....things always went well. Personally I find the idea of sharing a house with someone a bit wierd but then again with our 4 kids we are kind a crew. I might feel differently if I was traveling alone.

With our size of family we can usually find a loft somewhere for cheaper than a hotel and then have a kitchen to cook for the kids with. Also great for finding cabins in the mountains for a getaway.

We've used them exclusively throughout Canada many times...stayed in places on Vancouver Island, Ontario, Montreal, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Halifax...all good to excellent. Also used a company called Roomarama a long time ago, which may only be in Canada. Two places in the Maritimes left bottles of wine for us and one place left two bottles of wine! My son-in-law's family traveled throughout Europe using AirBnB...I didn't hear about any bad experiences.

Thank you, everyone for weighing in. I just booked my first....a private century home, just minutes from my college campus...going back for a reunion with a dear college friend who I haven't seen since 1969....I hope we recognize the campus cuz I doubt we will recognize each other!

I only had a couple of times experience. I like the price. I didn't like the bed, too soft. And I didn't like my breakfast being served. But the owners were very nice.

Xueling.....the owner took a close up of the mattress label! I guess he doesn't want anyone to be unpleasantly surprised....
