Solo Exhibit

Has anyone done a solo exhibit of their artwork? Im in the DC metro area and new to this but thought of stepping out and doing the exhibit. What were your experiences? Was it expensive yet worthwhile?

Regina.............no, not in the DC area.........Sydney, Australia..........big difference. If you're exhibiting at a Gallery...they will be most helpful.....it's in their
interests to do so..........I do know, an exhibition is a costly thing to do.........hope you get advice on that, and wish you great luck.

Love this, yours.................f.v.

I've done a few, but not in your area.

As Viva said, it's an expensive proposition, but can definitely be worth it. Choose your venue, exhibition dates, and opening reception invitees carefully.

Best of luck!

Thank you for your comments! I edited my post to not specify the DC metro area. I assume the process is the same everywhere. I am wondering about how to get started. Also the proposition of going to a gallery.Thank you Viva! Any responses on that would also be appreciated

Regina,

Here is an article about approaching galleries (written by our own Isabella Shores).

I hope this helps!

Regina,

Can be VERY expensive and NOT produce any sales. Have you been asked by a Gallery to do a show or are you just thinking of trying one? Are you selling now, outside of FAA? Are you selling now ON FAA?

I have never done a solo show but a friend of mine does and says the most important part is who has been invited. I guess that holds true with any show in that the tastes of the guest list needs to match up with the work offered.

I have never had a solo show in that area but have done about 45 of them to date. Biggest expense tends to be framing, I frame as I go so as to not have a huge expense all at once.

I've done quite a few, but not in your area.

Since you're a painter, I assume you'll be showing originals. So your big expense will be framing and hanging - presentation related stuff. The gallery or host for the show should give clear direction about what's required from you in terms of labels for the artwork, what types of hangers are acceptable, how many pieces, what their commission is, all that. I would suggest to anyone starting to show work in physical locations that you get insurance, or at least make sure the gallery has insurance that covers any damage to your work.

I have always turned a profit (sometimes a very small one, but still a profit) at shows I've participated in. It really depends on how many people see it and their response to your work. Ask the gallery how they'll be promoting it, and make sure you promote it online and in real life (postcards, mail them if you have a list, leave them in busy places if you don't) if possible.

One theory on solo exhibits comes from the "less is more" guideline.

Showing too many pieces can work against you. It's a good idea to really cull your work to the best you have rather than show everything you have.

Just sayin'. Best wishes on your solo show.

I've done several solo shows, but not in your area. Bill's suggestion to show only your best is great advise. Wishing you the best with it.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate the feedback. Thank you for the link Kathy K McClellan, I will definitely look at it.

Also, Rich Franco, I have not been asked by a gallery, I was just thinking of trying one. I have been on FAA since last year. I just started this adventure last year.

Hope after a while you have enough work of good quality to be able to do multiple shows! One thing I never do multiple shows in the same region, often hundreds of miles apart or even different states. Just hate to pass up opportunities.
