Anyone Care For Some Entertainment ?

Recently I have dropped being a Still Photographer to explore doing Video Photography just for fun, and for your enjoyment.

If this is against the rules then I'll shut er down.

ENJOY.

Pretty cool Bill.

It was as if the deer wanted you to give chase, for the fun of it.

I will say that you'll want better clarity and some judicious editing. Also a narrative arc will be very good. But your raw material is outstanding.

Thanks Uther. I do only straight video and no editing. They are shot at 1080p but walking and shooting is really hard and dogging brush and trying to keep the camera horizontal is a really difficult.

Here is one I just did this morning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzvCbQe_TTA&t=177s

That was so cool! I am amazed that she came up so close to you. The woods were beautiful too!

Bill Stephens

Gaby, I am glad you enjoyed those videos. There is one I am planning to do this evening that should really be funny if the deer cooperate...lol.

But in a couple weeks there will be no filming them because it will be deer season.

i think the next hobby should be video editing, half of that is empty trees. at the end i swore you were going to pass out and we would have had a nice shot of the canopy of trees and a bit of the sky. maybe some music, and plot. i'd rather see that O2 engine you have.

Mike, forget editing. This is real LIFE and not a HOLLYWOOD production. Like all those videos about fishing and how many they catch in a half hour....when really it took two days and a hundred cut and slices. And who needs music? Should I bring a Getto Blaster along? These videos are meant to BE THERE without all the fancy editing. That is actually much more difficult to do. One take and that is all you get...get it?

I will try to shoot one in a few hours that will be really cool. I got the script all done (in deer language of course). They are a hard bunch to work with however, there is a reason why deer have never been good actors in movies...they do as they like.

The 02 is top secret. So are some of the hunter deterrent systems.

Mike Savad

but then what's the point?

if your going to do it right you need

1. a shaky go pro cam strapped to your head, for the panic shots
2. a steady cam so it doesn't look like you put a camera in the back of a car
3. no mic.

to captivate the audience, you show the best parts. i saw, a deer coming from your back yard, up to you then walked away, then you followed it. there was no build up or suspense. it was more like walking a dog. so you have a build up of where are they hiding, then you see them frolicking. like when you take a photo, you don't show them all the misses, just the one good one. you did it in one take, but what did you do exactly? what did i just skip through? maybe you can do it at sunset, nice warm light. then get the night vision out so we can see negative versions of them with their eyes glowing white.

Mike, if you want to see all you are talking about there are plenty of stuff like that out there. NO EDITING means it is BELIEVABLE. It actually happened that way....no tricks. It is BEING THERE.

Now for my next video I have the stage set and I only get one take.

I am sitting on a log (as a deer hunter) patiently waiting for a big record buck. While the camera is searching the thick woods, I sit and wait...then suddenly the camera comes upon a huge buck and gets zoomed in. At that time the rifle ever so slowly comes up and and the sights land on him, then suddenly out of nowhere the hunter is attacked by his girlfriend and knocks the rifle out of his hand (and breaks it) and runs off into the woods, and the hunter sits there dumbfounded. Deer 1 Hunter 0. Let's see how close to this script I can get. No EDITING NOTHING.

Mike Savad

i believe you followed around a deer in the woods. whether it was 5 min or 11 min. there was no doubt in my mind that you didn't do that. i'm not sure what tricks there actually are, unless you got a fake deer and swung it from a tree. which would honestly be entertaining.

the thing is, its still real. ever watch that alaska show? frontier something, its boring. but they use exciting music to make a really dull moment into something exciting. it builds the suspense so people can anticipate something happening. they usually don't have people breathe heavy after a 50ft jog.

what you have right now is the blair witch project.

but anyway have fun, i think everything is better with editing, food, photography video. the chances of someone wanting to sit through 5 hours of real time video of a hunt, i'm betting is low.

Mike those show from Alaska all have actors in them and film crews. They have to have music to keep you watching. My stuff is REAL....no bull.

Just wait. I have just gotten started.

I need a nap before the next shoot. Also a shower. Deer refuse to work with sticky cameramen.

Mario Carta

Very cool Bill! I have never seen deer so friendly in the wild. I totally understand the wanting to do videography I have been doing the same, some for fun and mostly out in nature. I have also started doing some to promote my art work and even some e-commerce. Today I just finished purchasing a subscription to Filmora Wondershare editing software and I just now create this derivative video using cc commons lic video Titled "Best Fashion Model Video". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfYKzmPRn6g

You might want to consider the software I mentioned Bill , I have used many and this so far seems to be the best I have come across. I also subscribed to your youtube channel.

Edward Fielding

Good start but I agree. The YouTube crowd these days expects higher production values.

Mike Savad

the alaska show aren't actors, but it is scripted. they also cut out like 100's of hours of the nothingness to make the show interesting.

what would be interesting is to put a go pro or a few, on the deer's head. and then you can get a deer's eye view of where it goes..... then at the end, you get someone to film you trying to get the camera's back - that is what you tubers crave. slap stick. speed the chase up x2 and add benny hill to the background.

Ok I am back, everything went well until the Record button got pushed to end the recording just I was viciously attacked and zooming back in from a smaller buck and the big buck. They both may be done with the entire shoot. Stupid record button on this camera. It is so tiny and inset which makes it fine for recording flowers in a vase, but a nightmare for action videos. I glued a tiny nut on it so it can be actuated easier, but then it gets hit and shut it all down.

Mario, the deer in the forest here are the spookiest deer I have ever seen in all of America. You can walk for hours in the forests here and never see a deer. They are that good at evading humans, and understandably so as they are hunted in and out of season continually. These deer I am working with grew up on the Ranch and the main Doe I raised from about a week old. The others are her offspring and only one of them lets me come within a couple feet.

BNy the way thanks for the info on the software. Shooting this one was really had to do and editing would have made it 1000 times easier to do.

Here it is, as close as I could get in one shooting. https://youtu.be/B7ZLaPSRJf8

Mario Carta

Hahaha, the hunter gets bushwhacked!

Bill Stephens

Haha Mario, the hunter got his left ear bitten. It was a challenge to get all that in 2 minutes.

Mario Carta

I bet it was, those deer are a trip!

Bill Stephens

They are my biggest blessing here. Can you see how much I hate the idea of hunters coming in three weeks to shoot them? You only get such deer once in your lifetime...maybe. And people say, just let Nature take it's course...like wildlife is so meaningless....good for the shooting.

Mario Carta

I totally get it Bill, some years ago I started raising rabbits for consumption but I quickly became attached to them and I could no longer bare to kill them and I stopped raising them all together. All I can bare these days is fishing no hunting and I don't practice catch and release fishing for sport, I fish to eat my catch, I release what's not permitted to keep only.

Bill Stephens

I hear you Mario. I used to be an avid deer hunter who made a science out of killing deer with a bow, and for several years running always got the first buck checked in. My biggest achievement was downing a 13 point buck which placed 14th in Nebraska, with the first buck from the same place as the all time World Record. I got to the point were killing didn't even get my pulse going anymore. I became a killing machine, and now I am getting daily hugs from deer that trust me completely. Now I get to use those same skills to make sure the deer are protected. Maybe by helping these deer survive other hunters, I am paying for my killing days. In the process I have learned that man is the most dangerous "animal".

Mario Carta

I think it's great what you do for those deer, they have really bonded with you Bill, that's pretty amazing. My koi fish have really settled in and have also bonded with me especially when it's feeding time.

Bill Stephens

It's the same with my pond fish. All I have to do is show up at the dock and hundreds of fish instantly swim right to me. Food talks....haha.

Tonight the deer came and let me know something weird was going on with my car that was sitting in the carport. I lifted the hood and a Pack Rat had built an entire village under my hood and chewed lots of wires since the last time a drove it which was only 3 days ago.

Time to pack it in my friend. Tomorrow is another day.

"I do only straight video and no editing." is the new "No photoshopping!" People think that's a badge of honor. Some see it as half doing the work. Mind you, I'm a former TV news photojournalist. Editing was literally half the job.

I've pretty much stopped watching amateur made train videos because invariably it includes the two minutes before a train comes into view then an awkward pan shot as the lead engine passes by which then means we watch the train go away from us for the rest of the video.

Video editing is not hard folks.

Joseph, I don't seek any "badge of honor" in this, and I may not really do anymore (because I have a mountain of other things to do). But it seems in all the world of editing that it is not different than photoshopping everything and being accused of "cheating". I have had my share of that. I could edit the heck out of video if I was so inclined....but why? Why not go at one take? It's not acceptable in Hollywood, but then again does Hollywood dictate what everyone must do? Even with all the editing that goes on there, few movies are produced that are worth the time to watch them anyway. In the Art World there is no such thing as a work which doesn't need digital editing before the printer is turned on, because it is not worth printing unless it is "printable". But when you get to video, come on, we have all been edited to DEATH.

Mike Savad

did you crash that motorcycle, flew over a ditch into a fence like 100ft from the bike or something. and then some how totally survived, you were asleep?

ever have severe back pain? you can't move.. you certainly can't drive a car.

i think the more important question is - why do you know a guy that owns a helicopter, that happened to be in the right place? why couldn't he meet you there? and why did 911 hang up on you. they don't do that.

---Mike Savad

Bill Stephens

Mike this is in the middle of NOWHERE. You just don't call 911 and expect them to be able to find you as remote as I live. The helicopter is a life emergency service which only flies IF you are in the greatest harm, and you have to get to a hospital for them to take you to a trauma center. There is no such place here for 150 miles.

Patricia

Back in the mid 90's I was signed up on a couple of usenet wedding planning groups.

There was one woman who was an extremely active participant who claimed to be a high end caterer in West Virginia.

Spent most of her time giving out very "off" advice to the brides who came there and disparaging the various vendors websites and products.

She had one staunch ally in the group, a photographer from Virginia who alway took her side and defended her but had never met her in real life.

One day, after years of this online friendship, he found himself traveling near the town she lived in and decided to pay her a surprise visit.

He couldn't find her business anywhere near the area where she claimed it was located and started to ask around.

A bunch of people knew her and directed him to a trailer park way out of town where he found that she was a 500 lb. shut-in whose total experience in catering was occasionally serving food from the buffet at the fire department fundraising events, before she got too overweight to make it out of her trailer.

But, she talked a good game for 10 years before she was found out.

So, I do look at everyone that I only know of online with a great deal of skepticism.

And Bill makes it extremely easy to be skeptical.

Mike Savad

they will send a helicopter to you. i guy in alaska fell off a cliffside, they found him. people lost on a mountain, they find them and bring them home. i have a lot of trouble thinking they said - you live where? sorry that's well outside of our range.

didn't you say you were having a heart attack? that is one of those times they would send an evac out to you. bet it costs a lot though. you would have to go to a trauma center. and that other helicopter was within 50 miles? you knew where to go? they didn't do hospital runs, but what, let it drop off on their pad?

i find this story a real stretch even for you.

i can't imagine a worse then than a heart attack other then say, being eaten by a bear or shot by someone.

Mario Carta

Having worked in the communication unit and on the 911 bridge for a major US city police department and in the capacity of a sworn police officer and 911 supervisor it's possible to have 911 hang up on you and it would not have been the first time Mike, it happens more than you might imagine.

Not everyone experiences a heart attack in the same manner either.

Patricia, I would not fly with it either or drive around with it for that matter, mainly because to many people are not familiar with the laws as they are some what complicated, that is probably going to change very soon.

Drew

David S, that is an interesting story and everyone should have some skepticism toward their on line friends. I know I do!

that is doniphan mo. there are 2 hospitals there. was there some reason you needed a helicopter to go to any of these? and they can't find you? really? you say your in the back woods, but you always seem to have a grocery store, a gallery, car dealerships etc near you. but you make out like you have nothing but forest trees. people living out in the boonies usually don't have power let alone internet access. and any place a wire can go, so can an ambulance.

---Mike Savad

Bill Stephens

Well that is the bull sh$t here. Life Flight will only came if the Ambulance dems it necessary. So while these redneck ambulance people finally get to you and do their red neck assertions, you have wasted precious time, and they will take you to the closest BANDAD STATION where you STILL have to try and get to a REAL HOSPITAL! SCREW 911, and yes, they will hang up on you. I am still trying to get well enough to chew their asssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssses out over all this. But it won't change anything.

Mike, I don't live in Doniphan. I am 20 miles from it on the twistiest road you can imagine. They call it a hospital there, but it's a Bandage Station.

50% ability. So I may not be on FAA much longer.

It's funny, right now a nurse is coming here to check me. The poor guy has to go through deep woods where you think a Sasquatch is about to jump out at any moment. No cell service and no calling anyone if he get's lost. It will be interesting to see if he can make it.

Drew

Bill, I'm glad you are doing better!

" So while these redneck ambulance people finally get to you and do their red neck assertions"
Bill, the term "red neck" to many folks is a derogatory racial slur. Did you mean it to be this?

Bill Stephens

Drew, that description is accurate to these incompetent people....not racial. I could have said, "Retarded". Unless you have dealt with them you can only imagine.

Drew

Well Bill, you used the term in an angry manner.

According to Wikipedia it means:
"Redneck is a derogatory term chiefly but not exclusively applied to white Americans perceived to be crass and unsophisticated, closely associated with rural whites of the Southern United States. Its usage is similar in meaning to cracker, hillbilly, and white trash"

The way you used it IMHO is derogatory and probably racially charged! You know, taking it in context and all!

Bill Stephens

You know Drew, when certain people deserve to be called anything in the book, who really cares? These are the same people who were taking their sweet time when I hit that deer and they didn't see much problem with me. They are incompetent idiots, and I would rather CRAWL 50 miles to get help than to call 911 again.

And people call each other "Rednecks" here. Not all the world is determined by Wikipedia.

If you must know, this latest brush with death has only made me hate humanity all the more. All the stories I could tell about how I was handled in surgery and all that. Total incompetence.
