Using Flickr To Promote Faa?

Hello, all! I am very new here, and have actively participated in the discussions, contests and groups to build a bit of a following. I love seeing everyone's great works and the positive community we have here. That said, it appears that external promotions of our work are the really way to generate sales. I have done some shares on a few platforms, but I am not a massive social media user. I mainly use Facebook with a relatively small number of friends (for simplicity and privacy) and LinkedIn which I use for my office job. I know I should probably pick up my external marketing efforts if I want to start seeing some sales, hopefully.

I am very active on Flickr, though, and have a decent following and get a substantial amount of views. I imagine at least a few people on my Flickr following list would be tempted to purchase prints etc of my work, or at least check out my FAA profile, but I am hesitant to use it for promoting anything since Flickr seems to have a gray area on using the site for commercial use. (I am a paid, "Pro" member). There isn't really anything clear cut in the rules, but I have seen in forums on there that is frowned upon by Flickr. To be clear, I am not referring to using Flickr to license images, but instead to redirect them from an image I have on there to an image on here.

I currently place a link in the Flickr image description to the same image as shown on FAA, but I don't mention the photo as being for sale as a prints etc. I imagine this is a fairly ineffective practice for directing traffic here.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience using Flickr to promote their work on FAA, and what kind of experiences they have had with that (good and bad), as well as tips and tricks if you do so.

Thanks!

No, I have not been on Flickr, so I don't have any experience with it. You can get a lot of good advice on this discussion board, if you search for how to promote. There are many helpful threads. Good luck with your promoting of your art.

Hi, Chance,

Here's a great Flickr thread:

https://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=3781319

The thread is closed to new comments, but is full of good info, links, and inspiration. There might be a more recent thread here, somewhere, but this might get you started.

Best of luck!

The vast percentage of sales come from outside of FAA, not the groups, contests, or threads. I don't know anything about Flickr but I would guess it would be a better place to spend your time considering it is outside FAA.

I've been on Flickr since 2007, and until recently a Pro member since 2010. I'm a bit discouraged by the new owner of the planform and am presently transitioning to ipernity. With that said, I've had much response from posting my images on Flickr until recently. Since you are a Pro member, Chance, you can link in the picture description to a page with pricing on it .. like your FAA picture page … otherwise you have to link to the images page or a blog. Info at link below.

"Don't use Flickr for commercial activity, unless you’re a Flickr Pro.
Only Flickr Pro members are permitted to link directly to a shopping cart, checkout page, or pricing pages on other sites. Flickr Pros may also list prices for their products in their Flickr photo descriptions. For more information about Flickr Pro accounts go here."

I used to. Didn't see any effect. When flickr sold, I quit and deleted all my images. I just don't have the time/desire to manage a bunch of sites. This is pretty much it for me along with 2 social media sites and one other POD site that I use very little. I spend most of my time with my local gallery art, printing stuff for it, working there, promoting it, etc. and traveling. Africa for 3 week in Oct this year.
