A triple rare treat, as a lunar eclipse will coincide with a supermoon and a wolf moon this Sunday night. A wolf moon is the name ancient people gave the first full moon of the year when they noticed wolves howled longer and more often then, possibly because of hunger or mating season. A supermoon is when the moon's eliptical orbit brings it close to Earth. A supermoon is when a full moon occurs at the closest point (perigee) making the moon seem up to 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than when it's at its furthest point (apogee). A blood moon is when the moon blocks most of the sun's light hitting the moon and the Earth's atmosphere refracts some of the sun's rays to cast a reddish glow onto the moon. The eclipse starts around 10:33 p.m. eastern time Sunday night and will end about 1:51 a.m. Monday morning. The darkest peak (Umbra) will be at 11:41p.m. until 12:44 a.m. Monday. It will be visible throughout the US and other areas check to see how much of the eclipse your area will get to view if you are interested in watching or photographing.

And we are under a Winter storm in the NE .
Snowflakes, that is what we will see.
Enjoy, to everyone else.

I live in the desert and we hardly ever have rain or clouds and tomorrow it's supposed to be cloudy! I hope the forecast is wrong ...

Cool! The windchill will be about -30 here....but maybe I'll sit in our heated vehicle and open the window a crack ...if the snowstorm is gone, that is.

We're expecting clear skies here, and a comfortably chilly 40-ish degrees.
However, fog is expected to roll in pre-dawn Monday and stick around for hours. Hope it doesn't show up early and crash my eclipse viewing!

we have had rain for the last 24 hours turning off to snow in the morning. Mr. Moon has not shown his face here tonight.

I think it will be clear in North Texas, I hope to see something of it. Thanks for sharing the info!

I am in such a place for it! If it comes over the horizon as the Red Wolf, it will (if it is clear, and just recently it was clearing...)be perfect for being from here. Across the Hudson River and the "mountains" to the east I'm up hanging at (if not off) a ridge maybe 100 feet up from the surface of the river. Unobstructed view. Perfect. Fingers crossed

Well...poopies! I won't see it....our car (which I was going to sit in, nice and warm) made an emergency trip to the mechanics....and, as much as I'd like to see this I'm not going out in minus 30 degree windchill

I was able to see a little bit, but not enough to really recognize it as something special if I didn't already know about it. It wasn't very red at all here, maybe because of the thin clouds in front of it.

Cool shots Toby and Brandon! Here in PA when I went out into the freezing cold it didn't look anything like that - no "blood" effect at all :-(

Thanks Rose and Richard!
Richard you had to be out after 11:45pm or so last night to see the moon turning red. My pic was from around 12:30am or so this morning.

they say it will be out tonight as well, but its like 10 degrees right now, at night 15? i don't think its worth it for me to be out there for that...

I live in Montana...the Big Sky country. We have clear and amazing night skies....well until lunar eclipses come....then we have snow, clouds and zero visibility. Glad others got to see it and photograph it. lol

The moon always reminds me of this famous song from Taiwan, The moon, My heart. Another song also came to my mind, total eclipse of my heart. Of course, who can forget that Tang Dynasty poem by Li Bai. A wide range of emotions is associated with the moon: unrequited love, love you to the moon, bereavement, remembrance, longing for a reunion...here's my interpretation of the super wolf moon of 2019.

Good captures friends. I was camping and while sitting next to the camp fire we were watching the moon. Extremely clear skies but . . . I didn't have my camera with me. :(

Everyone who took photos you might have captured something extra extra special! During the red phase of totality a meteor impacted the moon's surface. Yes! It really did happen - check out this video which shows several videos (including one from Griffith Park Observatory) showing the moment and location of impact (one shows timestamp that you can use to check if you caught it in any of your photos).

I wrote to NASA Goddard about one of my photos and they asked me to try JHU-APL. Sharing this in case any fellow photographer is trying to contact NASA.
