Photo Books As A Marketing Tool

I have been going through my photos and doing some super critical editing and culling of them in order to produce a self published photo book of my best work. The idea is to give these books out to my friends who have high network potential. It is kind-of a crap shoot as to whether this will result in any material selling of my photos. Has anyone tried this, and did you have a good outcome?
I am planning just a small experiment to see what happens.

I’ve been using the Book Creator App for iPad, fantastic app, Landscape, Portrait or Square, check it out, it’s so simple to use. Pdf, ePub and you can send large files by Mail Shot, Book creator is also optimised for uploading to Apple Books (image limit 1600 by 1200 pixels) worth a look.

The image limit is only for uploading to Apple Books.

i will predict what will happen. they will say thanks. give you a compliment. and toss it on their table never to be seen again. that sounds like a very time consuming method that is very expensive to do. your better off sending holiday cards with your images, with a coupon for more or something like that.

i would never bother. because images in books are just pictures to look at. not to order. and if its a catalog, people will just thumb through it. your goal is to get people here, and there are other ways to do that. and if the book is big enough, they can just frame the pages. don't expect people to advertise for you. they won't. if i got a book with strings attached, where i had to advertise the contents for another person, i wouldn't want anything from them again.

my suggestion is to buy an account here. you only have 25 pictures, you've been here for 3 years now and only have 300 or so views. which means you have't advertised the free way yet. your book would be very small. the pictures are kind of random there is no direction for a buyer to really understand what your about. some of your work has no keywords, some have a few, and a few aren't marked for sale. a few are too small, a few aren't sharp looking.

and telling everyone that your a Self taught amateur photographer, won't help you get sales.

Seems like an extremely expensive way to market your work. How about a business card, postcard or flyer?

What do you expect the success rate to be on these books? 1% return?

Consider that someone like Peter Lik doesn't give away his books. He sells them as a premium. People either want your work or they don't. You shouldn't have to give them something to get them to buy.

Besides are you a well-known artist deserving a monograph?

You can create a beautiful book to SHOW people and give them an idea of your work. This would be a portfolio not a giveaway.

Long ago I put together a couple of small books but I didn't use them as advertising. They were more inspirational/humorous and I sold them at markets and in my Etsy shop. As everyone has mentioned, it's an expensive way to market. But if you're interested, I did them on Vistaprint, and they are called Photo Flip Books....they come in various sizes but mine were 5.5” x 7.5” . Speaking of Vistaprint, you might want to check out some of their other marketing materials. Maybe choose one or two images and have magnets done that you can hand out? Somebody here in the forum mentioned using a magnet with great success for marketing.

Photobooks are actually fairly cheap and can be a valuable closing tool if you are selling one on one at an art fair or in a gallery.

I have a friend or two that have books for sale in the galleries they are in and they sell a few book and they also use them as a closing tool to sell a higher priced piece.

Just giving them away to friends in the hopes that they are going to use them to pitch your images for you? I would say those are worse odds than a crapshoot.

I can see running value-added promotions where if a buyer spends $XXX dollars they will get a free book. But I don't know how you would promote that on FAA. They are really set up for that sort of thing and you only have limited ability to control your fee earned on the use of your image and absorb the cost of the book. And then, of course, there is the matter of getting the book to the buyer.

Keywording is definitely an art I need to work on, but landscapes don't tend to suggest to me lots of keywords. I will put keywords in the exif data, but the software only shows a thumbnail image while putting in the keywords. Plus FAA doesn't pick up keywords consistently when adding an image, so I have to go through the process again.

Most of my views have come in the last week, since I started posting to Pinterest on my newer photos. I have done nothing with twitter, but I may try experimenting with one or two images to see if it makes a difference.

I have been trying to have a diversified portfolio so that I don't become stagnant. I am also doing a lot more post processing than before, and removing images that don't have any oompf. Eventually I will replace all of the images that don't have high standards.

The photo books seem relatively cheap to me at $20 to $30 for 20 8x10 pages. I have a friend who owns a high middle of the road barber shop, where customers have to wait their turn to get a haircut. Putting theses photo books in his shop may not drive traffic for prints, but it may drive traffic for non print goods,

At this time Andrew, if you hope FAA is going to be a platform to create any decent number of sales for you I would not spend the money on a book. I would pay for the premium account and get a few hundred new images uploaded as fast as I could.

Of course, if you have other sales outlet you are hoping the book is going to help create sales for you maybe FAA is not al that important to you.

If you do not have a couple of hundred images then maybe you should consider reading the article I wrote.

a person getting a hair cut will glance at pictures, magazines there are full of cards for you to buy their magazine, yet i never once saw anyone tear it out and bring it home. your better off trying to convince the barber to hang up your art and have business cards. then at least they will know why its there.

but then of course you only have 25 things in the store. you can't bring someone into any store if they only have 25 things. garage sales have more than that.

landscapes can be keyworded if you knew where you were, if its a hill, mountain, plain, farm, what time of year is it? clouds? type of clouds, colors in the scene and so on. your describing with words what is in the scene. if its a famous mountain, mention that. etc.

the only way to get hair cutter waiters to buy your stuff is to have a tablet sitting there ready to order. that's it.

when was the last time you had a haircut, and wondered if you buy something in a book you saw while waiting? or have it come to mind at all? or let alone actually read a magazine, when everyone has a phone in their hand instead. that's why i think you should hold off on this idea. make a lot more work - aim for around 500 things before you try it again. and make some cards while your at it -- but none of that fineartamerica.com/something/something_else/your_Store/etc it should be a bought name.
