Description
Seal rehabilitation centre workers X-raying a harbour seal (Phoca vitulina). They are holding it still while the mobile machine (upper centre) takes the X-ray. The X-ray can be used to diagnose conditions such as fractures, pneumonia, and swallowed objects such as fishhooks. This work is being carried out at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC), in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. Sick, injured and orphaned seals are treated and cared for here until they can be released back into the wild. The centre was founded in 1971, and treats around 200 seals a year.
