Description
The honorable Amos T. Hall (1896-1971) framed
A man who became one of Oklahoma's most significant civil rights lawyers, Amos Hall was born in Bastrop, Louisiana, and attended Bastrop schools. He was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association in 1925 and then to the Tulsa County Bar Association. As the attorney for the Oklahoma Association of Negro Teachers, Hall led the fight for equal salaries for teachers via the case of Freeman v. Oklahoma City School Board (1948). Amos Hall was appointed special judge of the District Court of Tulsa County in 1969 and served until 1970. In 1970 he was elected associate district judge of Tulsa County and served in that capacity until his death. Judge Hall was the first African American to be elected to a county-wide office and the first African American to be elected a judge in Oklahoma. Please see "detail" (next painting) for close up of his quote.
