Description
Seal rehabilitation centre worker with harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) in a small pool after quarantine. Sick seals are kept in quarantine from the other seals until they have recovered. Before being introduced to the larger pools, they are placed in small pools, such as this one, to regain strength. This work is being carried out at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC), in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. Sick, injured and orphaned seals are treated and cared for here until they can be released back into the wild. The centre was founded in 1971, and treats around 200 seals a year.
