Description
An adult female sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), also known as white cockatoo and greater sulfur-crested cockatoo. This type is the largest and best-known of the cockatoo family and is often kept as a pet. It is mainly white with bright sulfur-yellow markings on the underside of its tail and wings and on its upcurved crest. Some also have yellow cheeks. Outside of breeding season, they are very sociable and will travel in flocks of hundreds. CITES lists this bird as threatened; however, in Australia, they are so numerous that they are often illegally killed as pests. The cockatoo in this photograph lives at the Jacksonville Zoo in Florida.
