This beautiful and colorful dragonfly was photographed in Canyonlands National Park, perching briefly on a branch. Its appearance is that of a Variegated Meadowlark (Sympetrum corruptum), a member of the family Libellulidae. Variegated Meadowlarks are found in much of North America from Ontario and British Columbia down to Florida and southern California; they migrate as far south as Honduras. They measures about 1.5 inches in length. The male is dark brown with an abdomen colored with red, pink, and golden brown; the female is not as brightly colored, and the juveniles are very much paler. Similar species include the Striped Meadowlark and the Cardinal Meadowlark.
