The Black-Winged Plover (Vanellus melanopterus), also called Greater Black-Winged Lapwing and Black-Winged Lapwing, is an East African species found from Ethiopia to South Africa in habitats of grasslands that are close to water. It is a member of the family Charadriidae. A blackish breastband separates the gray head and neck from the white underside. Black-Winged Plovers forage for food on the ground; their preferred diet includes termites (about 90% of its diet), beetles, grasshoppers,spiders, ants, and worms.

This Black-Winged Plover foraging on grassland was photographed in Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area, Tanzania, on 1-13-2016. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR2 telephoto zoom lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/1250 sec, f/6.3, ISO 320.
