In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park cedar waxwing flocked together in trees around a stream flying like swallows feeding on insects. Cedar Waxwings are social birds that you are likely to see in flocks year-round. They sit in fruiting trees swallowing berries whole, or pluck them in mid-air with a brief fluttering hover.
The Cedar Waxwing is a medium-sized, sleek bird with a large head, short neck, and short, wide bill. Waxwings have a crest that often lies flat and droops over the back of the head. It is a medium-sized, mostly brown, gray, and yellow bird named for its wax-like wing tips.
The Cadar Waxwing's mating season falls around the time of late Spring and running through late summer. During this time the male preforms the "Hopping Dance" and of she is interested she hops back. During the mating season insects become an important part of their diet.
