The Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna), a memeber of the Icteridae Family, is very similar to the Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), often distinguished by its call. There is clearly overlap of the geographic ranges of both species, particularly in Central and Midwestern states (such as Missouri). The Eastern Meadowlark measures about 9.5 inches in length and about 3.2 ounces in weight. Adults have yellow underparts, a broad black breastband, white flanks with black streaks. The upperparts are mostly brown with white and black streaks. Preferred habitat is grasslands, farmlands, prairie, and pastures. Preferred foods include arthropods, seeds, and berries, for which they forage on the ground. As open grassy habitat is shrinking, the numbers of Eastern Meadowlarks are declining; the IUCN Conservaion Status is "Near Threatened".
