Description
Description
This is a large wall sculpture/painting (30 inches X 48 inches X 1 inch.
A giant eye is peering through the bars of a tiny window into a prison where wall is covered with the graffiti of famous quotations about freedom..
The top layer contains the bars and window. You look through the bars to the bottom layer where the eye is painted on a mirror one inch behind the bars.
The painting never fails to attract a crown when it is exhibited. The viewers spend time reading and discussing the quotations. It was not meant to be beautiful . It was meant to be raw and provocative as it depicts the quest for freedom.
This painting was once taken down at a show in a hotel because the hotel management thought if might offend American hotel guests even though several of the quotations are by US presidents and philosophers : "Trust No Man With Power", John Adams; "Freedom Lies in Being Bold", Robert Frost; "Democracy is Nothing More than Mob Rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%", Thomas Jefferson; "We can't Defend Freedom Abroad by Deserting it at home", Marilyn Ferguson; "The other side of fear is freedom", Samuel Adams; "Crouch Down and Lick the Hand that Feeds You", Bertoit Brecht; "Freedom Can Not Be Given. It can Only Be Taken Away", Thomas Jefferson; "They Who Give Up Liberty, Deserve Neither Liberty Nor Security", Benjamin Franklin; "Any Man Who Takes the Liberty Of Another Into His Keeping is Bound to Become a Tyrant", H.L. Menchen; "You Can Only Be Free, If I Am Free", Clarence Darrow; "Is Life So Dear or Peace So Sweet As To Be Purchased at the Price of Chains and Slavery", Patrick Henry.

Thanks David. I did this painting 6 years ago and it appears that little has changed. If anything freedom continues to erode.
