Henry Alexander Wickham (1846-1928), British explorer. Wickham is famous for distributing seeds of the rubber tree from the Amazon to other tropical locations worldwide. He exported 70,000 seeds of the rubber-bearing tree (Hevea brasiliensis) from Brazil in 1876. He took the seeds to London's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, from where they were distributed to places such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia. He was knighted in 1920 for 'Services in connection with the rubber plantation industry in the Far East'. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
