Description
Hippopotamus. View of a hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) half submerged in a river. Hippopotamuses (or hippos) are large water-loving herbivores which live in and around rivers throughout southern and eastern Africa. They spend the majority of the day resting in water and grazing on water plants. At night, they may leave the water and eat fruits and sugarcane. Hippos live in groups of around 10-15 individuals, although much larger groups have been seen. In crowded areas, male hippos may fight with extreme vigour. Injuries and deaths are not uncommon. Hippos may reach over 5 metres in length. Photographed on the Luangwa River, Zambia.
