Artist's Description

Born on January 19, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, Janis Joplin broke onto the music scene at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival as the lead singer with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Janis released two albums with them including Cheap Thrills before starting her solo career. Cheap Thrills sold over one million copies in the first month after release and spent eight weeks as the #1 selling album. She appeared at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Her cover of Kris Kristofferson’s song "Me and Bobby McGee" hit #1 in March 1971, five months after her tragic death on October 4, 1970, from an accidental drug overdose in Los Angles. Janis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2004 Rolling Stone Magazine ranked her 43rd among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
