Description
The lion is a magnificent animal that appears as a symbol of power and courage. Renowned for its majesty, the lion possesses both beauty and strength. A lion's back teeth (called carnassals) work like a pair of scissors, which comes in handy when tackling a fresh piece of meat. Though the teeth help cut up their meals, lions don't actually chew their food, but rather swallow it in chunks, using only one side of their mouth at a time. The lion is the only member of the cat family with a tasseled tail. It starts to develop at about 5 months old, which serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. It's often used to signal to other members of the pride. The scientific name for the lion is Panthera leo. The adolescent male begins to grow its mane at about 18 months and it continues to grow until the cat reaches about five years of age. Throughout this period it is common for the mane to darken. A few purposes for the males’ mane is for protection of the throat area when in battle. It serves as visual aid so other lions can identify from long distances away being a male. A roar is known to be heard up to 5 miles away.
