Description
Jimmy Doolittle
Dec 14 1896-Sept 27 1993
James Harold Doolittle was a pioneering pilot, aero nautical engineer, combat leader and military strategist who bravely led an air raid on Tokyo and other Japanese cities four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The raid served as a powerful, psychological boost for America and rightfully catapulted Doolittle to hero status, far and wide. 80 men went and only 69 came back.
As an expert test pilot, flight instructor and aviation veteran serving in World War 1, Doolittle was more than ready to return to active duty in 1940.
In addition to his extreme bravery and flight skills, he was also highly intelligent, acquiring a Doctorate in Advanced Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Capping off a lifetime of achievements, Doolittle was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989.
He died in 1993 at age 96
