The Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) is a conspicuous and large hawk, with a length of about 19 inches and a weight of about 2.4 pounds. Their range includes the entire United States. They show lots of geographic variation in their feather colors. Most of their hunting of small mammals and snakes is either from a perch or while kiting. While the adults have the distinctive red tail, the juveniles do not.
This adult Red-Tailed Hawk was photographed hunting over the landfill at Croton Point Park in Croton, New York on 11-3-2013. It caught a Common Garter Snake and was flying with the snake to its perch in a tree. Much of the park is landfill, covered with tall grasses, and inhabited by small mammals and snakes. I used a Nikon D7000 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 lens to capture this image.
