Description
I painted this from a piece of art I found online that had the whimsy I wanted, but not the warmth or color. In the original painting, the mermaid was much more rigid and cold looking. I softened the look of her face and gave her a soft smile to enhance the maternal feeling I wanted her to have while cradling the baby octopus. The original had a cooler, delft blue and khaki background, and so I warmed that up with richer blues and warm beige to gold tones. The original mermaid had reddish brown hair, but I made mine more red to further pop the vibrant colors. I also added a tail, which the original did not have.
When finished with the pen and ink work, I photographed the painting, and then proceeded to photo enhance it with post processing, adding even warmer tones, a more blushed look to the skin, and more texture by layering a bokeh effect, which gave the look of light filled bubbles to the image. The result was quite different from both the original and my basic painting!
The painting is also for sale. If you are interested in the original piece, please contact me and I will send you a photo of it without the enhancements. The original is lighter, and the blue is more turquoise in appearance. It is more childlike in its appearance, and doesn't have as much of a textural look to it. It would be lovely for a child's room, or any place a little whimsy is required!
