Description
The church of St. Martin. York (england). HDR.
Often known as St Martin le Grand and most famous for the clock overhanging York's main shopping street, St Martin dates from at least the 11th century and was one of York's main parish churches and the civic church. It was largely destroyed by bombing on 29 April 1942. In the 1960s the surviving south aisle and tower were incorporated in a rebuilding on a smaller scale under the direction of the leading church architect George Pace. It was re-hallowed in April 1968 with a dedication to peace and reconciliation. It is open daily.
The church was probably founded before the Norman Conquest in 1066, and may be a thousand or so years old. What we can see of the medieval fabric is mostly from the 15th century. But the history of York's ancient churches is usually complicated and St Martin's is no exception.
The present clock was built by Geoffrey Newey of R Newey & Son in 1966
Although St Martin's has had a clock overhanging the street since the 17th century the present clock dates from the 1960s restoration of the church and was built and maintained for over 40 years by Mr Geoffrey Newey of the York firm of R Newey & Son. It was the only turret clock to be designed by his father Roland, who died before it could be constructed.
