Statuary at Gettysburg Battle Field (US Civil War). This particular piece honors the Union Signal Corps atop Little Round Top Mountain. The Signal Corps on both sides provided communication, command and control and relayed intelligence via the use of large signal flags manipulated by soldiers who would necessarily need to be on high, exposed ground, making them primary targets for enemy snipers. Little Round Top mountain overlooks some of the most horrendous killing fields of the 3 day battle (July 1 -3, 1863,) the Devil's Den, the Wheat Field and and the open slopes leading up to this exposed rocky mountain top.

This was a cold, cold, January evening. I had told my wife I wanted to shoot a couple more pictures and that I'd be back to the room soon. She said, "You want to go up there, ALONE, when it's getting dark!?" Took her back to the room. Devil's Den was down hill to my left. Culp's Hill, about 400 yards to my front right. I guess they were OK with my being there, because I could feel them all around me. I was most definitely not alone up there. I could feel their desperation, their horror and their hope. I could hear it, smell it.
