Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….

Archaeopteryx is a creature that seems to be half bird, half dinosaur. He is featured in this latest of my paleo art series. It lived in the Late Jurassic Period around 150 million years ago and it seems to represent the transition from dinosaur to bird. As a result I've called this image The Last Dinosaur. Though, of course, I'm speaking symbolically. There were still dinosaurs walking around at the same time as this guy. In fact, some scientists argue that he was in fact simply a dinosaur (using Linnean classification) and had no actual relation to modern day birds.
Actually, this work started out as purely a landscape with no fauna. In fact, I would say the landscape is the real star of this artwork. I really wanted to go for the painting look. It lacked a focus though so I went through my entire menagerie of animal models until I landed on the Archaeopteryx.
Daniel is a classically trained artist. A native of the East Cobb community in the Atlanta Metro area, he majored in art at the University of Georgia and has since accumulated over 25 years of art experience. Most well-known for his scientific illustrations of prehistoric creatures, he is also accomplished in creating Wild West art, fantasy art, wildlife scenes, and horror illustrations. His works have appeared in magazines and newspapers; the covers of books, albums, and products; and even in a few science and natural history museums.
