Description
One of my favorite places to go to relax is the Cades Cove section of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. My husband and I try to visit as often as we can. It is a great place to visit regardless of the season or the weather. I often take pictures to bring home and use as references for my paintings. This very cloudy January day we were driving around the cove counting deer and turkeys just before sunset.. (My favorite activity on these trips!) About midway around the Cove we happened upon this very large crow setting on one of the fence posts. I stopped to take his picture. We had a very long photo session. he seemed very pleased to preen for me at many different angles and was inspecting me every bit as much as I was inspecting him. The denuded tree behind him and the winter landscape with the awesome grey, heavy clouds looming overhead just seemed to perfect a composition not to paint so the Raven was born. I came home did a little research to find out the difference between a crow and a raven. The raven is bigger and his tail is vee shaped at the end. My friend was a crow but for the painting I made him a raven! I liked this painting enough to make this one my current business card! It is very dark and almost mysterious and haunting.

It was a dark and stormy afternoon! All the tourists were looking at each moving grass blade and floating leaf....if just a very slow moving bear would lumber across the road and pose for a couple of thousand pictures or so they would all be so very happy! Instead the steadfast watcher on wings keeps his wings ready in case of trouble to warn all of the hidden wild life and sll of the helpless people trapped in the long lines of gazers watching always watching for the one that does not fit the mold. The one that is searching for the interesting , the pleasing to the eye, that little something that makes a great picture. For this one it was the bird himself! He posed for many pictures. He waited while the camera was adjusted. he looked on and waited. After all that was his job in all this the watcher that waits! A good composition but still a great picture to paint and have in the process. .We often go to the mountains for inspiration and they never fail to provide that inspiration!
