Description
The Road of Happy Destiny is a painting expressing the spirit of hitting the road to satisfy the flame of wanderlust always burning in a gypsy soul. I actually created this cheerful painting during a challenging period of my life. I remember feeling stuck as an artist like my creative wheels were stuck in a rut. I'd lived and worked in the same studio for 40 years. Mind you, I loved my little Venice Beach studio, but I knew in my heart it was time for change. I felt a need to travel, but I was unable to get away at the time due to various responsibilities.
So instead of booking a flight, or even cranking up my car for a day trip, I did what artists do, I hunkered down at my easel, began to sketch, revved up my imagination, and set off on an adventure, a road trip in acrylic on canvas. As I worked I reminisced about various travels over the years.
As a kid, my family took summer vacations. We loaded up the Ford Ranchwagon and drove north up Highway 5 through the heart of California past wonderfully lush farmland, rolling green hills, and purple mountains. We camped in Yosemite and other magnificent National Parks.
As so often happens when I paint, a simple landscape transforms into a story. While I tend to be a loner when I immerse myself in work and focus on the subject matter at hand, my muses love a party. With their encouragement and inspiration, I was soon online searching for images to fill my landscape with spirited folks expressing their lust for life. I feel blessed to almost never end up painting exactly what I set out to create.
Curiously enough, not long after I completed this painting in 2017, my life began to become considerably more adventurous. Before the year was over, I would leave my beloved studio, and set off on a 2,600-mile road trip to Savannah, Georgia. Looking back, in a way The Road of Happy Destiny was a goodbye kiss to my home of 60 years, The Golden State of California.
