Description
Blue-footed boobies. View of a pair of blue-footed boobies (Sula nebouxii) standing on a rock. These seabirds live on the west coast of Central and northern South America and nearby islands. They feed by plunge-diving: flying over the water and falling with wings drawn in into the midst of a shoal of fish, catching one in their bill. Large groups of boobies sometimes perform this manoeuvre simultaneously. These boobies generally nest in small colonies on islands, laying eggs directly onto the ground rather than building a nest of any kind. Their blue feet are used in courtship displays. Photographed in the Ecuadorian Galapagos Islands.
