Description
The majority of the 280 species of irises are native to Europe and Asia. However, there are 28 species native to the United States. I first saw these flowers growing when I was playing baseball many years ago. A cluster of them were growing on the banks of our local pond. I was supposed to be playing right field, but the flowers captured my interest.
Continuing loss of habitat threatens some of our native species. Many of them flourish in wet meadows, swamps and other wetland habitats. Residential and commercial construction continues to eliminate these ecozones. Native irises are extremely difficult to transplant and usually do not survive the attempt. On national forest lands, it is illegal to dig or pick wild irises. “Wild Iris and Dragonly,” is a mixed media digital painting.
