Description
In this family portrait 8 black Rhinoceros hornbill birds, Buceros rhinoceros, with white, yellow and red long curved beaks having a single horn or casque connected above are arranged with 8 companion Great hornbills, Buceros bicornus, with yellow and black heads and long curved yellow and red beaks with two separate ovoid casques attached above by a short bridge rather than a single horn. All 16 birds are all positioned on a white background with a blue repeating India-inspired decorative fabric pattern with fig leaves and figs (a favored dish of hornbills). Hornbill birds of the genus, Buceros, are distinctive in their colors, bills and flight and found in parts of India and Southeast Asia. On top of its long curved beak it is has unusually shaped casques or horns. Hornbills are generally omnivorous primarily eating fruits but their diet also includes small mammals, reptiles and insects. Extinction is looming; these birds are unfortunately hunted for their feathers, meat, and horns making them vulnerable to extinction and placed on endangered species list! Please visit phelpsmandala.com for more beautiful and intriguing birds, including toucans and hummingbirds, and other colorful and creative plants and animals all featured in mandala and nature print form found in 34 collections. Join me in celebrating our earth’s biodiversity! Hornbills are on parade on coffee mugs, pillows and tote bags.
