Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….

The Western Flycatcher was split into two very similar species several years ago, the Pacific-Slope Flycatcher (Empidonax difficilis) (with more of a northern distribution) and the Cordilleran Flycatcher (Empidonax occidentalis). The differences are in their range and in the voice of the male, as well as in their DNA. Both species are found west of the Rockies, in areas with coniferous forest, streams, and shaded canyons. They both measure about 5 inches in length, have a faint eye ring, have a greenish tinge above and a yellowish wash on their throats, breasts and abdomens.
This photograph of a Western Flycatcher was taken 12-19-2015 at Branford Hills School in Branford Connecticut, where it was observed foraging on insects in low and shady undergrowth. It had been spotted, identified, and posted by three Connecticut birders. I was in the area and able to get some photos of this very rare bird for Connecticut. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4 vr2...
