Chickadees are lively little birds that come in two species where Dawn lives in the foothills of Wyoming's Snowy Range. One is the more common Black-capped Chickadee, and the other is the Mountain Chickadee. This little fellow and his mate are two of Dawn's best friends, and she calls them Didi and JeiJei (Little Brother and Little Sister in Chinese). They perch on her hand for sunflower seeds, and in the depths of winter they follow her wherever she hikes, fluttering from cedar to cedar along her path, and often fluttering to her shoulders or head. In summer Mountain Chickadees usually leave the foothills for the higher mountain forests, but Didi and JeiJei stay in the draw near the cabin, where they nest and raise young, so Dawn is lucky enough to watch their antics (the parents have an elaborate courtship ritual) and meet the next generation as soon as they fledge!
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
