This piece is dedicated to Isiah C White and the men of *Anubis*... if they were still around, I'm sure they'd have a *sistah* in the group too.
In the 1970s, there was a group of students at Princeton University whose areas of study were very diverse (e.g., law, psychology, engineering, politics, architecture, and pre-med); the thing that brought them together was *Music!* They formed a band called *Anubis*, and as they continued to hone their individual and collective skills, they eventually coined the descriptive phrase *"A student of the JAM"*. This was their admission that they had not yet realized their musical potential, and that they were still, studying, practicing, listening to and learning from the musicians that had come before. It was also a statement that conveyed great respect and admiration for the jazz musicians that were out there "doing it for real"!
