Angkor Wat was the royal temple complex for a long series of Khmer kings. The king was not allowed to touch the ground so he walked on stone walkways and before he entered the temple complex he had to read some scriptures from one or more of the libraries like this one in the background. This famous world heritage site was once the center of a Khmer empire that included Cambodia, Burma, as well as most of Thailand and Vietnam. Though the largest of ancient religious and urban centers is was one of many in the area. It is an amazing arrangement of inner and outer galleries full of bas reliefs depicting Hindu and Buddhist beliefs and stories.
