Affectionately known as the "Big E" the USS Enterprise was the sixth aircraft carrier in the US Navy. Commissioned in 1938, she participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than any other ship in the US Navy. There were several times during the war when Japan claimed to have sunk the Enterprise. For this reason she also became known as "The Galloping Ghost". Enterprise was the most decorated American ship of the war earning 20 battle stars. Near the end of the war the ship survived two kamikaze attacks and was preparing to rejoin the fight after repairs when the war ended. Today the ship's bell survives at the US Naval Academy. The nameplate from the ship's stern is also preserved.
