Description
My wife is Indonesian and perhaps I'm a little odd but I enjoy my in-laws and look forward to any trip to visit them. My wife's village, Tombatu (which means stone people), is up in the cool low mountains of North Sulawesi. One of the favorite foods is a freshwater fish called 'ikan mas', gold fish, but it is really a kind of carp. They are a farmed fish. We visited a lake which has been subdivided into family territories by long narrow crisscrossing docks. You can see how the fish are contained by large nets that hang in the water.
The fish not only can't escape but they can easily be retrieved by pulling a net out of the water.
The fisherman is actually the son of a nephew. He has made himself comfortable by sitting on his flipflop sandles. His plate has a bed of rice with some fragments of fish and a local vegetable called kungkung. He is eating with his hand, the handiest spoon in the world. There is a lot more where this came from. Take a look at my gallery.
