A prothonotary warbler shelters from the wind in the bushes along the oxbow in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake Park.
The prothonotary warbler (prothonotaria citrea) can be found in the summer in the hardwood swamps and bottomland forests of extreme southeastern Ontario, Canada the the northeastern United States. During the winter it migrates to the southeastern United States, around to Mexico, Central America, northern South America and the West Indies.where it can be found in mangrove forests as well as wooded swamps and bottomland forests.
It is one of only two warblers that nests in natural or artificial cavities, sometimes using old downy woodpecker holes for their nest.
Once known as the golden warbler, it is the third plate in Audubon's series. You will find it feeding close to the ground as it searches for insects, snails, spiders, seeds,fruit or nectar. It is about 5.5" long with a wingspan of about 8.8."
Like many of the old generation of photographers, I began with a Kodak box brownie when I was a kid. When I saw what resulted, I was hooked. Having grown up with an aunt who was a professional artist, I was always exposed to the creative arts. As a result, I have always liked to paint. Later I went to the Defense Information School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in 1966 where I got more intensive training in photography and photojournalism and practiced that craft in Vietnam and the United States. I studied with the Famous Artist’s and Famous Photographer’s Schools to help hone my skills.
