The Head of the Rocks Overlook is a roadside pullout along Scenic Byway 12. Early pioneers used these canyons to travel back and forth between the town of Escalante and the town of Boulder. The town of Boulder is located 14 miles (22.5 km) north of the Head of the Rocks Overlook. In the early 1900￿s, the residence of Boulder developed a booming cattle industry, and cream became a commodity with over 250 gallons (946 liters) of cream being transported out of Boulder by mules and wagon trains each week. To accommodate for the large amounts of cream being transported out of Boulder, cream cellars were built into the embankments and lined with rocks, near the Head of the Rocks Overlook. The trip down through the canyons was so rough that the cream would often turn to butter before reaching the cellars. Up until the 1940￿s, everything from mail to household goods traveled by horseback, mules and wagon trains through these canyons between Escalante and Boulder.

My interest in art began when I was young. In my early school years, my favorite part of school was "free time," when I was allowed to go to the back of the room where there stood a big easel with poster sized paper attached to it and large bottles of poster paint sitting on the shelf just below. I would open those big bottles of poster paint and just start painting. I loved to paint and I loved being creative with all the bright poster paint colors of red, yellow, and green, blue, black and white. I thought that was the greatest thing on earth, however my painting career did not go far; l was never encouraged to paint, nor did I receive too many compliments on my paintings, but that did not matter to me, because I found inner happiness...
