This painting was the result of reading a book on Goya and assisting an art student with a project on Goya. I got so involved in the story of Goya and enjoyed the art so much I decided to recreate this picture of Judith and Holofernes and it is of one my personal favorites.

The story goes:-

Towards the end of his life Goya became withdrawn and disillusioned.
Between 1819 and 1823, he painted a series of 14 or 15 dark, enigmatic images directly onto the plastered walls of his house. The paintings were known as the black paintings.
'Judith and Holofernes' depicts a scene from the apocryphal bible book Judith, in which Judith beheads Holofernes.
"Then she came to the pillar of the bed which was at Holofernes' head and took hold of the hair of his head and said, 'Strengthen me O Lord God of Israel, this day'. And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might and she took away his head'.

Dark, but interesting and fitting for the state of mind...
