In 1973 the Paul Thayer was constructed in Lorain, Ohio by American Shipbuilding for Kinsman Marine Transit. She, along with other ships in the class, represented a shift away from larger ships with larger capacities on the Great Lakes. Not every port could accommodate the thousand footers that were being constructed and ships were still needed for ports where those behemoths could not service them.
The new River Class ships were the answer. The Thayer was one of three River Class ships constructed.
In 1994 the Thayer was renamed Earl W. and then, in 2008 was renamed the Manitowoc sailing for Lower Lakes Towing. Over the years she has undergone modifications that have allowed her to carry a wider variety of cargo. These modifications have reduced her capacity to 19,650 tons. She has a beam of 68 feet and a length of 630 feet.

The boats intrigued me and for a time I wanted to work on them. My career took me down a different path, but I never lost my interest in the boats.
