Description
The original painting is consist of four separate canvases which serves as 'one painting' conceptually and i now merged them together. This painting is the 'first' of my early religious series, of which i have continued on this theme since then. The story that informs this painting is: i took some drawing materials namely, Indian ink and card/mat board, while i went to the farmers market. As i entered the gate of the market, i saw the woman in 'white' 'preaching' and the woman on 'drum' and people watching/listening.I saw and felt a powerful message in the emotion of the woman preaching and i was 'emotionally charged' and thought that this moment was 'visually and conceptually compelling' to capture so, i put down my basket and began drawing, people occasionally peeped over my shoulders to view my study. I then included some of the people listening to the 'emotionally charged woman preacher'. The language/style of dress of the woman preacher and the woman playing the drum is called 'poko'; which means "praise"; and this type of religious believe is called "revivalism". especially kept the drawing and at times i revisited it for inspiration because of the essence captured in the 'emotion' of the woman preacher; which i could not captured convincingly in the transfer sketch on canvas.
