Platypus by 2 by Joan Stratton - An underwater illustration of two duck-billed platypus frolicking in the depths of the river. The unique features of the platypus, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, and the first scientists to examine a preserved platypus body approx. 1799 judged it as a fake, made of several animals sewn together. I can assure you they are a real animal and very sweet little things. I used to see them often when I was a teenager swimming in the rivers in country Victoria during the summer.

This egg-laying mammal can be found in river ways throughout the eastern seaboard of Australia and in the lower areas of Cape York, Queensland. First drawn for my Grow With Joe Children’s Books – Minnamoolka Series Book 4 Kia’s Animal Alphabet, there are a number of works in the series.
